Kenai Fjords Glacier Lodge
Reviewed August 27, 2012

You start with a several-hour scenic/wildlife viewing boat ride into the lodge, with a stop near a calving glacier and it just gets better from there. The lodge has a lovely view of one glacier and you can kayak to another or explore the other areas around the lodge with a variety of guided trips. The staff is extremely knowledgable and enthusiastic, food was great, and activities were accessible to all skill levels. Kayaking equipment and cabin and lodge facilities are done right. It's amazing to stay so comfortably in such a beautiful and remote setting.

Hi Lily, thank you for the great review and comments! We do try to maximize comfort at our lodges, without "overemphasizing" it - so I'm very glad to see we are accomplishing that mission! As an eco-lodge, we are always seeking non-impact ways to provide a high quality experience. We appreciate your feedback!

We just returned from a fantastic trip to Alaska and the Kenai Fjords Glacier Lodge was one of the highlights. From the boat ride out, seeing whales, dolphins, sea otters, and other wildlife, to the perfect cabins with views of Pederson Glacier, to the bears who stroll by now and then, to the wonderful food, everything was perfect. This place is very well run and all details have been thoughtully planned out. The guides are very knowledgable and capable, and the equipment is topnotch. The full-day (6 hours) kayak trip to Aialik Glacier was beyond description---kayaking on glass-smoth water amid small icebergs (don't get too close!). I am really glad I came across this place while researching out trip---it is fairly new (their 4th season of operation) so might not yet be included in all the guidebooks, but it should be. five stars, well earned.

P.S. the food was so good we bought their cookbook (mostly baked goods).

Room Tip: They assign you a cabin but do not worry; all have the same great view of the glacier across the la...

From the private boat trip out to the Lodge until we left, we had a fabulous experience! We saw dall porpoise, many whales, seals and birds galore. We were met by enthusiastic staff who walked us to the lodge from the landing site. Cabin are sited perfectly so you don't look at anyone else and they are in the woods. The cabin was pretty, clean and a great view of the lagoon. The trips they offer during the day are two 1/2 day trips and a full day trip. We kayaked to Aialik Glacier which was outstanding. Beautiful glacier and we were able to get up close to see the vibrant blues and the calfing of the ice. We also went across the lagoon in a canoe and went to Pederson Glacier which was also beautiful. The meals were very tasty, the staff was knowledgeable and enthusiastic about Alaska, It was a pleasure being away in a place that had everything we were looking for.

This was one of the most outstanding trips ever. Our family of 5 went to Alaska over July 4 week, wife and 3 daughters 17,15, and 12, where we experienced both the Kenai Riverside Lodge and the Kenai Fjords Glacier Lodge. We originally considered cruising but we turned to land based adventures in order to maximize our "real" Alaska experience. When I called AWA they were so easy to talk to and worked with me to craft an itinerary around our travel dates. We spent 3 days and 2 nights at each lodge. The cabins and accommodations at both places were wonderful. The food was outstanding and the waiters worked with us to even get our extremely picky eater 12yr old feed. The guides and staff at both lodges were extremely knowledgeable and helpful. Although almost all were college grads in things such as ecology, AWA had obviously trained them very well in how to handle guests and to create a welcoming atmosphere. On the raft trip down the Kenai we counted 38 bald eagles. Wow. The Glacier Lodge was an unbelievable place. Remote, yet comfortable. Green, yet welcoming. The 6 mi. kayak to a nearby glacier with lunch on the moraine was unforgettable. There was plenty of all ages to do and the facilities and gear supplied was ideal for what was required. Overall it was a fabulous trip and a wonderful company. I would highly recommend using AWA for any trip to Alaska

I am particularly pleased to read your comments about your total experience, from working with our sales staff, to the guides, lodge chefs, etc. I know they all work really hard to make every guest experience exemplary, but it sure is nice to hear it from you! This was our indulgence for our Canada/Alaska trip and it was worth every cent. It is a very special place that gives you an intimate experience of the wilderness accompanied by an amazing venue, staff and food. There has been a lot of thought go into making this just perfect and there is lots of little touches which add to it like the provision of rain gear, sunscreen and hors douevres at 5.30pm! The experience starts before you get there as the cruise out is really special; we saw lots of animals but the best was the humpback who did THIRTY breaches right near us.....wow. The tours provided are really good as the guides are very knowledgeable and the numbers relative to each guide are small. My biggest complaint was the lack of toast for breakfast (lots of amazing muffins, eggs etc though) which tells you something about the quality of the experience.....if this is my biggest problem then it was not really a problem! Anyway, squeeze the funds out of your budget for this one as it is MUST DO.

This wonderfully new, modern facility with a a rustic look... met every expectation of our Alaskan experience! The staff was warm, fun, and welcoming. The accomadations were comfortable, exceptionally clean and relaxing. The food was beyond delicious and plentiful.
Our boat ride from Seward was exciting and fun...saw Orca whales!
We enjoyed back to back days of sea kayaking to the Ailak Glacier...one in the rain, the other in bright sun...two entirely different excursions!
We hiked to the Pederson Glacier and enjoyed seeing bears and a wide variety of Alaskan wildlife and plants...
We highly recommend spending the money to experience this wonderful location!!

After a lot of research, we made the Glacier Lodge the centerpiece of our family vacation to Alaska (two adults and two boys, 16 and 12). Hiking, canoeing, kayaking and an incredible boat ride to and from the lodge made it one of the most memorable trips venues we've been to. In the true spirit of Alaska, the near-constant rain didn't even dent our enjoyment. The highlights were seeing countless humpback whales while traveling to the lodge and the canoe ride at the foot of the glacier.
