“A "Must Do" in Alaska”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 8, 2012

This wonderfully new, modern facility with a a rustic look... met every expectation of our Alaskan experience! The staff was warm, fun, and welcoming. The accomadations were comfortable, exceptionally clean and relaxing. The food was beyond delicious and plentiful.
Our boat ride from Seward was exciting and fun...saw Orca whales!
We enjoyed back to back days of sea kayaking to the Ailak Glacier...one in the rain, the other in bright sun...two entirely different excursions!
We hiked to the Pederson Glacier and enjoyed seeing bears and a wide variety of Alaskan wildlife and plants...
We highly recommend spending the money to experience this wonderful location!!

After a lot of research, we made the Glacier Lodge the centerpiece of our family vacation to Alaska (two adults and two boys, 16 and 12). Hiking, canoeing, kayaking and an incredible boat ride to and from the lodge made it one of the most memorable trips venues we've been to. In the true spirit of Alaska, the near-constant rain didn't even dent our enjoyment. The highlights were seeing countless humpback whales while traveling to the lodge and the canoe ride at the foot of the glacier.

At first I was skeptical about putting out the $$ to book a trip here, but I finally caved in and am I glad I did. When you start adding up all you do and get for the money, it's a bargain, and that doesn't even factor in the memories of a lifetime. Trip includes: wildlife cruise en route to the property; canoe ride on lagoon after arrival; deluxe accomodations in the wilderness; unbelievable meals AND drinks and snack constantly available. By staying 2 nights, we were able to take a 6 hour kayak trip through icebergs to Aialik glacier on our full day at the resort. Because a family of guests filled up this trip, a second trip was scheduled for us and guide, Brian, gave us a private kayaking lesson and guided us to the Glacier. Kayaking on the ocean to a live, growing, calving glacier is an experience that words cannot describe -- but that wasn't all....after clean up, we enjoyed a dinner of prime rib and salmon. And it wasn't over yet, the next morning we still had time after breakfast for a canoe ride/hike to the foot of Pederson Glacier with David as our guide. The blue color of the glacier was beautiful to behold. Visitors get to chose your guided activities the night before. All these activity and I still had time to sit and sketch the view of Pederson Glacier from the resort. Thanks to all of the staff for making wonderful memories of Kenai Fjords for us.

I could have given the lodge 5 out of 5, but I didn't just because I think they could improve things a little on the food front.
The trip out was great, in our own personal tour boat. We saw Dall Porpoises who played in the bow wave, hump back whales, sea lions and seals. There were plenty of self serve hot drinks on tap and Bill dished up lovely warming chicken soup to warm us up as we visited Holgate Glacier, as well as a packed lunch.

The weather for our whole stay was, at best, drizzly and, for most of the time, monsoon like, but the lodge was well equipped with wellies, waterproof trousers, and jackets. Our room was comfy. We had a paddle around the lagoon on arrival and saw a black bear along the beach who seemed completely unperturbed by our presence.

On day 2 we kayaked to Aialik glacier which was by far the highlight of the trip, despite the rain! You really don't notice the lack of sun with a big blue glacier looming into view. Our guides were helpful and informative

What could be improved? I know it was a mammoth job building the lodge and it's too late at this point, but how "green" are the green credentials when the insulation in the lodges is so minimal to the extent that we needed to turn on the propane gas heating?
Food-hmmm...not as good as it could be, despite the location and logistical difficulties. I'm not saying it should be gourmet, but they could improve on the presentation and quality of the end product of the evening meal (I say this with experience family style catering).

I am glad to hear you had a good time at the lodge despite the rain! While we can't control the weather, we can make the best of it and I'm glad to hear your kayak trip was good. Aialik Glacier is an exquisite, awe-inspiring place.

To address your concerns regarding heat in the cabins; we provide propane heat in guest cabins as the cleanest source of heat available to us in this remote location. While the cabins aren't winterized or meant for winter use, we do recognize guests have varying comfort levels with cool summer mornings. In our main lodge, our primary heat source is a wood-burning stove where dead and down wood is burned. Supplementary propane heat is used if needed for guest comfort.

Regarding your dinner meal, we strive for excellence at every opportunity, including our meal preparation, presentation and of course taste! Thanks for your thoughts...they are very much welcomed and appreciated and will be shared with lodge staff.

Happy and safe travels, do come and see us again if your plans bring you back to Alaska!

Every part of our visit was wonderful. We saw whales, sea otters, seals, puffins and bald eagles on the boat ride in. The lodge is warm and inviting, the cabins have two comfortable queen beds and our cabin had a nice view of the lagoon and Pederson Glacier. The guides are enthusiastic and helpful and the outing experiences were lots of fun. We canoed and hiked to the Pederson Glacier, hiked to the top of the nearby ridge, kayaked to the Aialik Glacier, went on a nature hike of the area and a boat ride to the Aialik Glacier. The food was quite good and they prepared special vegetarian entrées for my wife as well as accommodated my food allergies. They even made a special dessert for my wife’s birthday! (Special note for wine connoisseurs: There is no corkage fee at the lodge. We brought in three bottles of wine, one for each night.
We had an amazing time, even though it rained or sprinkled our entire visit. (We never saw the sun or blue sky during our trip.) The lodge has wet weather clothing and a drying room for your gear if it gets wet.
Best advice I can give you is spend three night at the lodge. This will give you plenty of time to take advantage of everything this special place has to offer. Yes, it is a bit pricey, but the trip was well worth it.

We were hesitant at first to pull the trigger and stay here, but it was such a nice place and so much value. We loved everything! We saw a superpod of killer whales and dolphins on the boat ride to the place, then sea otters, black bears, Aialik glacier was dropping ice shelves, bald eages...one of the best places in the world! The staff was so helpful too, you could tell they loved their jobs and they really made it an enjoyable stay.

If you love the outdoors with the comfort of a beautifully built lodge and cabins this is the place to go. All cabins have 2 queen beds, private baths and stunning views of Pedersen lagoon and glacier just outside the window. The meals are good but not outstanding, this is the wilderness and you don't come here for your 'haute cuisine' experience!
Activities are mostly on the water - kayaking and canoeing. Staff is very friendly, helpful and knowledgable. One thing you can't do here is hiking, even though it's advertised in the brochure. A 1 hour stroll along the beach, on the nature trail or to Pedersen Glacier - that's simply not hiking for me. There are virtually no trails and you can't hike anywhere on your own.
Anyway, the setting is simply breathtaking, wildlife and flowers are plentiful - and this is ecotourism at its best.
