We drove from LA to Joshua Tree and were not disappointed. Hikes and nature walks for all levels and the views are amazing (both reachable by car or foot). Bring everything you need (especially water) as there are very limited services -- vault toilets are plentiful enough throughout the park but that's about it aside from the fire pits at camp grounds.

We knew very little about Joshua Tree NP when booking to stay at 29 Palms - it was just a convenient stop en route from Las Vegas to San Diego. So we didnt expect a lot. Happily we were pleasantly surprised. We had two days in the Park and were knocked out by the wide variety of landscapes. We did a range of hikes including Hidden Valley and Barker Dam and drove to the scenic viewpoint overlooking Palm Springs. It was a relaxed couple of days made all the better by the advice on what to see given to us by the rangers in the visitor centre.

I recommend you set aside the time to drive through the entire park, as the landscape varies widely from one end to the other. Hidden Valley is a great place to stop and get out of the car for a short, easy (flat) one mile hike around the valley. You'll get a good understanding of the sheer size of the rock formations and learn a bit about the valley plant & animal life. We didn't prepare for a picnic, but I wish we had - the picnic areas are right among the rock formations and it would be a great place for a bite to eat while you watch the sunset amongst the rocks.

This is a real gem of a trail. The scenery is spectacular. Watching the rock climbers was a realtrear as well. It is hard to keep your eyes on the trail while looking up at the many rock formations. The trail is ver well maintained and a great walk for most anyone that can walk a mile. Take your time!

This area was a great place to picnic with many picnic tables, grilling areas and outhouses. The hike was short and great place to watch people climb the rocks. This was an easy trail with little kids and grandma.
