At the Craters Edge
Reviewed November 13, 2009

Great place to stay in Volcano. The website accurately describes this property, very comfortable, the bed was excellent, the surrondings are beautiful, the spa, was wonderful. The Rooms have plenty of fresh air, and quiet, and plenty of creature comforts. The owner Melanie leaves, fresh fruit, wine, bread, and chocolates for guests. The refrigerator, has all we needed for a health concious breakfast, oatmeal, hard boiled eggs, orange juice, tea and coffee.

We clike to spend our money on great accomodations when traveling, but like to save money on eating. We recommend the Cafe Ohia in Volcano, for great deli food at a reasonable price.

We would highly recommend "At Craters Edge" for anyone traveling to Hilo.

We stayed here hoping to have a romantic somewhat pampered experience for our honeymoon and we were quite disappointed with this B & B. Sure it looks nice in the pictures and don't get me wrong it's very nice but for the price we paid it sure wasn't worth it. We had to make our own breakfast from cheese string sticks in the fridge or from the single served boxes of cereal. Yes there were some nice fresh fruit when we got there, but if you're staying more than a couple of nights like we did nothing gets restocked and you end up having to go out and get your own food. The host wasn't there the whole time we were there so it felt like we were abandoned after we spent a lot of money. The rooms weren't nicely tidied up after we left or anything. We had to take out our own garbage as well. When I'm on vacation, let alone my honeymoon I don't want to do too much work or ALL the work for that matter. This place should be advertised as a Bed only...cause the breakfast and service was more or less MIA.

We were welcomed on our arrival and given some useful tips about visiting the Volcano National Park...which was just around the corner...and given a tour of our accommodation. We stayed in the Haiku Garden room for 3 nights for our honeymoon. What a wonderful place to stay! The jacuzzi and sauna in the open air amongst the rainforest trees was such a treat and the bed was so comfortable. And waking up in the morning, surrounded by the rainforest, was bliss. Highly recommend this place!

We stayed "At The Crater's Edge" in order to be close to the Volcano's National Park which is just a few miles away. We were delighted to find, upon arrival at this property, absolute luxury at every turn. The accommodations are quite elegant, a nice surprise in such a remote rainforest location. Nothing was overlooked. From the hot tub spa set in the surrounding ancient forest and beautiful gardens to the comfortable beds and quality bedding, the owners fully intended to spoil their guests, and they succeeded very well indeed. And the nearby town of Volcano is very quaint! There are several good places to eat including a great Thai restaurant. Make sure you make it to Ira Ono's "Volcano Garden Arts" (a cool gallery) and the Sunday Farmer's Market!

It is hard to put into words how perfect the Crater's Edge is. When we arrived, there was a freshly baked coffee cake, freshly handmade chocolates (by the proprietor) and a bowl of the most amazing fruits I had ever eaten in our room. We were given a bottle of wine, a tour of the tiny slice of heaven and then left to enjoy it. All of the amenities that cost you extra at other hotels is given freely here. If you are looking to retreat from the world in total luxury while staying close to Volcano National Park - this is your spot. Sitting in the hot tub, surrounded by an ancient rainforest is unlike any other travel I have ever experienced. We were sad to leave. Though the town of Volcano doen't have a lot to offer - and Hilo is just a dump - you're not there for any of that. After long hikes in the Park, there is no better place to return to. We hope to go back some day.

The Haiku Room is perfect for a romantic getaway. We really enjoyed the solitude and incredible beauty of the rainforest. There is nothing more satisfying after a day of hiking the Volcano Park than to get into a jacuzzi in the woods. Take the chill off the evening or morning with the fireplace. Check your email on the balcony with the wireless Internet. Grab the supplied flashlights for your trip to the Lava Tube. There is so much attention to detail. I have to respectfully disagree with the guy who wanted more curtains in the Haiku Room. There are beautiful bathrobes provided....

We stayed for two nights at this place (haiku room). The property is situated about a mile from the Volcanoes national park. Set in a rainforest setting, the cottages are airy and incredibly luxurious.

Melanie Boudar, who is the owner has taken care to ensure the stay is comfortable and memorable. Little touches like wine and chocolate, magazines to read, make it wonderful.

Its not a full breakfast, but the fruits, juices, cheese, cereal , banana bread and snacks were more than enough for the two of us.

Last but not the least the hot tub adjacent to our room was great after a long day of hiking in the park.
