At the Craters Edge
Reviewed March 10, 2014 via mobile

Just left the Craters Edge after 2 nights exploring Volcanoes National Park. It was the perfect base, only 10 mins from the park and from Volcano village where there are a number of places to eat including Thai Thai restaurant which was so good we went both nights. The Craters Edge is just 2 rooms, very private and quiet with everything you could need. There is a fully stocked mini fridge with drinks and snacks (all complementary) with cereals, milk and lovely banana bread. Drinking water, teas and coffee are also provided. The place is completely off the grid and very Eco friendly, recycling is encouraged. The bathroom is modern and has a separate shower and jacuzzi tub. Toiletries are provided as are flash lights, umbrellas and beach mats. Everything was super clean. We did not use the spa but it looked good with a small steam room and hot tub, all in a private covered deck at the back of the property. The caretakers, Jay and Jason were helpful and friendly although we saw very little of them as we were out all day at the park. Only cons were lack of drawer/hanging space (I hate living out of my suitcase), a lumpy mattress and occasional barking from the neighbors German Shepherd dogs... none of which would prevent me visiting again.

We booked a night here through a travel agent and wished we had spent more time! It is a two room property that is adjacent to a private residence, kinda a bed and breakfast type. it is nestled in a rainforest setting with floor to ceiling windows. Very calm, serene and private. In the room, we were greeted with fresh Hawaiian fruit, and homemade banana bread. The refrigerator was stocked with drinks and snacks. Along a wooden pathway there is a spa, we went in a 6 in the morning (not yet adjusted to the HI time) and it was amazing, it was a little bit drizzly and the setting was perfect for couples. I HIGHLY recommend if you are planning a trip to visit the Hawaii Volcanos National Park, you stay here, it is only a mile from the park entrance. I will definitely stay here the next time I stay on the Big Island!

We stayed here as a base to explore Big Island as part of a Hawaii trip. The words B&B don't really do this place justice, it is absolutely stunning and the room would complete with any 5* hotel. We stayed in the Haiku room for four nights and were sad to leave! Two of the walls are floor to ceiling glass that look out to the surrounding forest. The room has a four poster bed and a fire, as well as an incredibly well stocked cupboard of food (not to mention the yummy freshly baked banana loaves and blueberry loaves!). The bathroom was also a delight and huge! The room was spotlessly clean and the hosts very helpful and friendly. The location at the edge of the Volcanos National Park is brilliant and if you have a hire car it's easy to tour the island. We couldn't recommend this place highly enough and if we are lucky enough to visit the island again we wouldn't dream of staying anywhere else! If you are staying here don't miss the fantastic Thai restaurant in Volcanos village, we ate there 2 out of our 4 nights and it was exceptional!

We chose this for our honeymoon spot on the Big Island and were not disappointed. Nestled into the jungle near the volcano is this lovely property with well-appointed rooms amidst the native plants, very romantic and private (we were only guests there). There is a nice hottub just a short walk from our room, just note the times/rules. It is quiet and very comfortable, with a small fireplace and windows into the jungle on 2 sides of the room. The bathroom was nice and the room came equipped w/ some snacks (best banana bread!), fresh water, fruit, coffee maker and cereals, milk, juice etc. for our use at no extra change. J&J were so nice and accomodating, during the storm, offering to let us stay if needed. Don't forget to view the AMAZING stars from this location, very romantic. I hope they expand to have more outdoor amenities or paths among the greenery, assuming property is bigger.

Room Tip: the 2 back to back rooms we saw were either facing the entry or the hot tub. If you are alone on the...

I was very pleased with our stay with here. The room was very clean and cozy, well equipped with a fireplace and jacuzzi tub and beautiful views of the rainforest. I wouldn't consider this a true bed and breakfast as there is no prepared breakfast but the room is well stocked with fresh fruit, bread, juices and snacks. My only complaint was that there is no insulation between the ceiling and the metal roof and the rain made quite a lot of noise and isn't ideal for light sleepers.

It's the little touches and attention to detail that really make a place stand out. J&J are lovely. The oft-mentioned banana bread was great, and there was also various fruit, snacks, crisps, noodles, coffee, teas, little snack cheeses, oatmeal, and cereals. The jacuzzi bath was a good place to relax after walking all day. We did not try the outside jacuzzi, but it looked well done.

The peace and isolation were perfect for us - a little slice of rainforest of our own. Two of the walls are glass and it felt like you were in the tree ferns. In two days we got bright sun (through the surrounding trees), mists, and full-on rain. What's nice is the room can adapt - open the two sets of glass doors or close it all down and turn on the fire. Perfect.

I have a thing about tree-ferns, so this was special. In fact the garden has many clever touches and interesting ideas.

The thought about sustainability is good to see.

Volcano itself is a small town - the choice of food in the evening is limited, but the Thai was great.

At the Crater's Edge is an interesting experience. The room is beautifully furnished although not necessarily in a practical way - i.e., not much closet space. But it does offer complete privacy in a very quiet setting quite close to Volcanoes National Park. This isn't really a B&B but does provide hot and cold cereals, fresh fruit, and a banana bread. We really enjoyed staying here.
