“Right on the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 21, 2013

Being a retired military spouse, I was able to enjoy staying at KMC with my best friend and her husband. Since one pays according to rank, we stayed in a cottage with ensuite bedrooms-the main bedroom has a TV, a fully-equipped kitchen, a living room with a fireplace and TV. It's a throwback to the 50's but clean and functional. Above all, the price is right and affordable compared to the rest of the Big Island hotel rates. The USPS is right there in the camp and very convenient for shipping souvenirs back home. The camp is well-kept, has a small gasoline station, an entertainment/recreation center, a cafe/restaurant-foods/prices are decent, a convenience store and best of all, it's INSIDE the park and just 22 miles to/from Hilo.

This is a camp operated for military-active and retired. The cabins are pretty old and the amenities are bare bones. However, we stayed inside the Volcanoes Park for under $100 so you can't beat that. You can wake up with the sun and have the entire park to yourselves until the rest of the tourists start showing up--I noticed around 9am.They also have a General Store where you can stock up on any supplies you might need and a Café that has a great value for breakfast. My wife and I had omelets with all the usual sides (hashbrowns, toast, and coffee) for about $14. They book fast, especially on weekends. If you keep realistic expectations, this place is an awesome value.

We stayed here in a 2 bedroom with full kitchen cottage for 7 nights. I could have gotten a far better price on a condo, however I couldn't beat the unique vacation right off of Crater Rim drive in the Volcanos National Park. We could walk about 5 minutes from our cottage, cross the road and we were at the crater rim with a really scenic trail around the crater. We found no one on the trail in the early morning and the trail was surreal with steam rising from the cracks and holes along the trail. Also the sunset was awesome from scenic viewpoints on the trail as you walk towards the Jagger Museum, and the bonus was we had it all to ourselves! Staying in the park made it easy to head to the Thurston Lava tube in the morning and once again we had the whole thing to ourselves!
Our cottage was kept very clean and our housekeeper, Jeogy brought us some fresh papaya from her farm which we had for breakfast everyday!
The history of the Kilauea Military Camp is also unique. It served briefly as a Japanese internment camp and a prisoner-of-war camp during World War II. Definitely an interesting place to just walk around!
One other bonus to staying on this side of the island, was that we were less than one hour's drive to one of my very favorite spots on Earth, the Ahalanui thermal pool! The pool is heated by underground volcanic sources and refreshed by ocean water as the waves crash over the wall near the pond! It is like a giant jacuzzi, especially if the waves are big!

You need to have a positive attitude here to really enjoy your stay. In other. ords appreciate the great location on Crater Dr. And the friendly staff and convenient little store and mess hall. And prepare to overlook the ancient sofa (I put a sheet on it which improved the situation) and the broken down mattress and the moderately dirty shower curtain. Just pretend you are back in the 50's or maybe the 40's and enjoy the great advantage of staying right in the park for a good price. We had cabin #62 which has 2 bedrooms 2 baths and an original kitchen. The stove and oven worked great; no numbers on the dials due to decades of use!
Lunch was good in the mess hall andthe daily specials were great including curry and chicken adobo.
Breakfast, was ok but cook your own dinner! No really; cook your own dinner! We would stay here again as we had a grest time. And we really are appreciating the condo we're renting now in Kona!

If you come to the Big Island to explore the volcanoes, this is the perfect place to be. You can hike the trails day or night and marvel at the sight. Flashlights are provided in the rooms. That is, if you're not a stickler for cleanliness. Our room was dirty, to sum it all. The carpet, the windows, sills, nightstand, lamps, cabinets, etc., all had dust, dirt, webs, and the toilet was moldy! If you can stand all that, well, you can at least enjoy the fireplace. There's a kitchen with utensils which saved us a lot of $$ on food. We didn't bother to complain since we were out the most part and we probably got soot and sulfur on ourselves anyway from the crater hikes. But be aware. The staff, however, was warm and accommodating.

This was a great place to stay for active duty military as well as veterans and retirees. It was very affordable. We stayed for three days and nights in the two bedroom cabin. It included a fireplace and a jacuzzi tub. You stay right in the middle of Volcanoes National Park. Check their website often as they good deals depending on how long you stay. We had a lot of fun and seeing an active volcano was awesome.

This place is a more down to earth kind of place. Hilton it's not, but that's the best part of it. It does get chilly at night and they have fireplaces in living room if you need more heat. I saw others had complained about cabin 24 but we stayed in that cabin and didn't have any issues like what they are complaining about. It was big and spacious for a small family. Those that expect luxury accommodations at reasonable prices should stay elsewhere. Then you may get what you expect and may pay double what the cost is here to stay. Guess I have been in military too long because as long as the roof and sink don't leak, I am ok with anywhere I stay.

Room Tip: We had cabin 24 in the back away from everyone which works out great for us. We had 9 year old daugh...
