Kilauea Volcano Military Camp
Reviewed March 27, 2004

We stayed 3 nights at the KMCmilitary camp at the Volcano National Park. It was a very convenient location for exporing the park. It is right inside the park and you can walk across the street and walk the trails through the steam vents. the Volcano House is the only other hotel in the park and the prices are much higher. the steam vents were an incredible sight. You are surrounded by steam and you can feel the heat. We signed up for the Ginger Package which is a fantastic deal. The prices were unbelievable! We enjoyed the tours in first class big busses. We couldn't get over how dark it got there at night. The stars were beautiful and it was very quiet and peaceful. the weather is very changeable on that side of the Island since it's a rainforest. It never rained hard on us but there was light rain frequently. Suggest you wear layers, as it's warm at the bottom and cool at the top of the volcano. We tought the volcano was very fasinating. We stayed in a 1 bedroom cottage facing the trails. the cottages were very clean and attractive for a military location and considering the prices we paid. The Ginger package included a majority of our meals in a cafeteria. The food was average but adequate for the price. The people were all very friendly. Many people we talked to said they came back and we feel we'd like to go back again. the volcano wasn't erupting while we were there but it was still interesting. It would be a great place for a family reunion but you may need to be sponsored by a military person. There were a lot of school groups there when we were there. Aloha!

We spent 4 nights in a cabin at the military camp in February, 2004. That was plenty of time to see all the major attractions around the area and take a day drive up to Kona and back. The cabin had a fireplace and with the night temps in the 40's, the fire logs we found in the cabin made the evenings quite cozy. The cabin also had a hot tub and we enjoyed using it as well. The cafeteria was very handy and the breakfasts were especially good and were moderately priced considering the prices on the local economy. The general store was well stocked. We even attended the Sunday morning protestant chaple service at the chaple and enjoyed it very much. There are some excellent restaurants in the area, too. The volcano house is superb if a little pricey, and the Lodge at the national park is also very good (both for dinner). Mary & I both rated our stay at the Military Camp as one of the highlights of our 19 days on three different islands in Hawaii.

We have stayed in various cabins at KMC. They vary in size. One was a two-bedroom suite, which accommodated a three-member nuclear family and two extended family members. Perhaps the greatest impression is being able to wake up to the silence outside, at the 4000-foot level. And when the weather is dry (or even wet), there are many hikes you can take, tailored to whatever time and energy you want to expend. From the front entrance to the rim of Kilauea Caldera is about a quarter mile.
From there, you can turn left and go a mile to Volcano House hotel and the park's Visitor Center. Or you can turn right and go a mile to Jagger Museum and the Volcano Observatory. I am looking forward someday to doing the 11-mile Crater Rim Trail, which circles Kilauea Caldera. There is a good cafeteria at KMC, and also a decent snack bar in the bowling alley. Plus that, a convenience store. At the back is a chapel, to meet your Catholic or Protestant spiritual needs on Sundays.
And there is a drama theater, which so far we have not yet experienced. And if you are there on a Tuesday night, go to the Visitor Center for one of the presentations of "After Dark In The Park." Unfortunately, we weren't there at the right time to experience it ourselves. For food, besides KMC Volcano House is nearby. Buffets for breakfast or lunch, and an excellent menu for dinner. Not too far outside the park is Volcano Golf & Country Club, with hearty breakfast and lunch fare. And about three miles on the highway towards Hilo (north) is Volcano Village with various restaurants also. You do need a military connection to stay at KMC. Either yourself, or you have to be there at the same time with someone so attached, such as a family member.Try it. You'll like it. Too dark at night, if you want to walk from building to building.

My husband and I were stationed in Hawaii on Oahu and we vacationed on the big island. It was so peaceful at KMC and the staff was fantastic.
We took the tours of Hilo and of the lava flows and we had such a fun time. I felt like a kid again. Everything was taken care of. Our room was comfortable and we felt very much at home. We were able to rent bicycles and there was a nice workout facility as well so that my husband could keep up with his PT. The visitor center to the park was right down the road and it was very convenient. I definitely recommend this place.

I should have said this was a terrible place so people would stay away and I would have a better chance of coming back. However, this is one of the best military camps available. The staff are friendly and will assist with all your needs. You fly into the airport and are picked up and taken to the camp. We signed up for the package which included three days of touring the island and visiting the flowing lava. The tour guides are very friendly and knowledgable. The camp sits directly over the volcano. Not to worry, the activity is a few miles away. It was a nightly activity to drive to the lava flow and sit in the darkness and watch the miracles of nature. The packages included two meals a day so that made it very easy also. There is a laundromat so you don't need a lot of clothes. The cabin has a fireplace and small kitchenette. There is a small shoppette available, bowling alley and an Internet cafe so you can check your email. We plan to go back again this year.
