“Short, but amazing”
Reviewed February 10, 2013

See what it looks like after a volcano erupts. You feel like you are on the moon. An eerie, scary beauty.

“a small drive gives a perspective”
Reviewed January 14, 2013

time flies when you are in the VNP... after the 20 mile drive stopping at the various spectacular points on the chain of craters drive, dusk was setting in and we drove to this and walked a just a short way... nice informative board, and the familiar bleak scenario... were really thankful mother nature creates lush forests in such areas after a lapse of time... we need to view such scenes to appreciate the lush greenery in the other areas

“brief, but interesting”
Reviewed December 5, 2012

We walked this trail on a windy, rainy morning. It is interesting to see the devastation from the volcanic ash many years after an eruption. The overlook into the crater at the end of the trail should not be missed. This is an easy walk and takes little time, and well worth the trip to see the effects of the volcano.

“A short trail”
Reviewed December 2, 2012

The Devastation Trail does look devastated. You go through a short rain forest and come out to a desert looking place with a hill in front of you. Nothing is grown on it. You stay on the trial through another short rain forest and you come out to the Pu'u Pua'i Lookout where you get a pretty good view of part of the Kilauea Iki Crater. Something I wouldn't go again seeing I already seen it once.

“1/2 mile hike over scorched earth”
Reviewed November 24, 2012

Although this is a short hike on a paved path, it offers a shocking look at the results of a volcano that erupted in 1959. Ohia forest covered this area once. Some of the vegetation is returning and in the middle of the trail, we had our first look at Hawaii's national bird, the endangered nene goose. In the midst of the black cinders, the nene was feasting on berries from plants growing out of lava pebbles. Life goes on...
