Plan to spend 4 to 5 hours. Drive. Hike, drive. No active lava flow this summer, but the steam vents, sulphur rocks etc unlike anything we ever saw. The petroglyphs and Hawaiian history are worth the hike as well.

The park has lots of hiking and the Rangers are extrely helpful with maps and information. You also can get to the volcano without walking far and is wheechair accessible. Amazing how hot the steam vent is. They do not have food there but is a great place to bring a picnic lunch.

This was a great day and you could stay more than one if you like to go on longer hikes. I stayed in Volcano area, which I highly recommend because you can be in the park all day. We ate breakfast at the military commissary which is cheaper than other restaurants. Entrance fee is currently $25 and is good for 7 days. Stop at the visitor center and get a map. Bring lots of water and do not wear open toed shoes. Enjoy!

We took the tour to the caldera with the volunteer - it was outstanding. He spent time talking about the geology, age of the islands, the volcanos on Hawaii and history of the park itself. Plus, he knows his stuff about volcano's, the rain forest we went through to get to the floor of the caldera. Wow. Takes about 2 hours round trip and it's a haul back up out of the caldera. Wear good shoes, bring your water and enjoy. We then ate lunch in the lodge overlooking the volcano. Excellent service, good food and the view! Nice gift shops in the lodge, too.

Be prepared for a full day adventure if Driving From Kona area. Absolutely stunning area. A lot of the park was closed due to gas levels being high including the Lava Cave we had hopped to see. Be prepared to do some hiking if you want to see things up and personal. Otherwise, you can drive a lot of it. No volcanic activity while we were there but still so worth the visit.
