“Manage Your Expectations”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 30, 2013

It may have been our fault, but we were expecting some firey molten lava. Instead looking at the volcano is more like looking into a brown crater with steam issuing out of it--not so awe inspiring. We also went to see the petroglyphs--a longish walk with no shade. I can see how they are a spiritual experience for those who go there to connect with their ancestors or bury their children's umbilical cords, but for the casual tourist, this is more like looking at circles incised into rocks. And the lava tube is interesting because of how it was formed, but it really looks like your average cave.

“Great way to kill a couple hours”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 28, 2013 via mobile

Nice clean park that deserves a couple of hours. Our kids were a little let down that the volcano wasnt erupting though...

I think they were excited at the possibility of seeing some volcanic action and let down when we could only come up with steam vents. From what we later learned, you should come as late as possible to get a glimpse of the glowing lava from the museum.

$10 to enter. Nice stop for a picnic.

“Informative”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 27, 2013

There aren't too many places where one is able to see an active volcano. There were many steam vents visible. Alas, no flowing lava during our visit. There is much to see & do if you have the time to spend: visitor's center, 30' film, hiking trails, volcano crater viewing area. The park rangers & volunteers are all knowledgeable & helpful. There is a minimal parking fee for the attraction.

“Make a point of getting there...”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 25, 2013

If you vacation on or make a visit to the big island, this is a must see. Take the entire day and make sure you experience it all. I am fascinated by volcanoes, so am a little biased. We made two trips, one during the day where we visited the Haggar Museum at the Kilueah caldera and made multiple stops while driving down chain of craters road. Another at night at Haggar when you can experience the red\orange glow emitting from the caldera. Not a lot of lava flow to experience while we were on Hawai'i, but the views are spectacular...

“Just amazing”

The most interesting part of Hawaii, I think, is the lava. It is everywhere and there are now plants and animals and birds that thrive in it. At the park you can find out why. Spend a couple of days there taking in all the interesting facts & formations.
