As we've learned on this vacation... the least costly things to do in Hawaii are absolutely the best experiences! Today was the BEST $10 we have spent! Rainforests, lava tunnels, steam vents, hiking down into the crater, exploring the formations and steaming cracks, and then hiking back up - an accomplishment but well worth the effort. It was an overcast day (our helicopter tour was cancelled) so we spent much more time in the VNP and enjoyed every second. I actually don't know how we would have made the trek back up if it wasn't for the overcast skies and the light mist in the air. It is not for elderly or those with a disability. Such an interesting adventure for any age and any member of the family. The rangers are top notch and so good at directing you to the exact right excursion for your skill set and interests.

This is a must see for any visitor to the Big Island!

We had such a great time driving and hiking around the park. It was a lot of fun to see where the lava crossed the road. Highly recommend!

We had a great time at VNP! We drove from Kona, stopping along the way at numerous scenic overlooks, South Point, Punalu'u bakery for lunch and Punalu'u black sand beach, so we did not arrive until early afternoon. We drove Chain of Craters road and loved every mile! We could see the steam where lava was entering the ocean off in the distance, and the volume of lava surrounding the road was awe-inspiring. The landscape is like nothing I've ever seen before. We loved seeing the ocean arch (but hold on to your hats -- it's very windy and I lost mine!) and walked to the end of the road to see the "road closed" sign surrounded by lava. We stopped on the way back to visit the petroglyphs trail - farther off the road than I expected, but not a tough hike. We were fortunate to stay at the military camp within the park and enjoyed gazing at the red glow from the active crater after dark. The shops at both the visitor's center and Jagger Museum are nice. We visited Thurston Lava Tube early the next morning and found it deserted - we literally had the tubes to ourselves! We then hiked down to the Kilauea Iki crater, passing interesting plants along the way. The size of the crater is massive, and the path is relatively easy to navigate. We didn't have time to walk all the way across the crater, so we went out the same way we went in. If you are not spending the night in the area, bypass all the sights along the way and get there early - there is so much to see and do. And if you have the chance to stay nearby, take it - you won't be sorry.

We couldn't go to Hawaii without seeing the volcano. Several trails were closed due to elevated gas levels, but we were able to enjoy a few hours sightseeing. We park at the visitors center and walked along the sulfur banks out to the steam vents and back along the crater rim trail. Took the car out to the Jaggar Museum for the closest view of the volcano possible from the top, then down to the Thurston Lava tube and a walk along the devastation trail. Worth the drive and the day spent there.

Spectacular and a must visit. Our kids are young adolescents so we didn't do a ton of hiking. We did do the sulphur trail, lava tube and steam vents. You can't miss these with juniors.
