“Beautiful Active Volcanoes”
Reviewed February 12, 2013

If you have never been to the Big Island of Hawaii, you must see this attraction! Get close up to smoking volcanoes and walk inside lava tubes, the info center is excellent and guides are very informative! Be ready for a lot of driving and make sure your camera is set for pictures!

“Not what it used to be.”
Reviewed February 11, 2013 via mobile

Admittedly it's been a few years since my last visit to Kilauea Volcano, but the experience is not what it was.

Before you were able to drive right up to the centre of the crater and actually walk on the lava field. The heat through your shoes was quite an experience.

Now, despite being heavily advertised including on the park website, even the 11 mile drive around the crater rim is closed. A mile and a half drive from the park entrance to the first rim observation building and back the same way is all that is available.

The volcano is stable right now and there are no signs of unusual activity. The locals don't know why there are severe restrictions in place.

It would appear that the dreaded Big Government and the attendant 'elf 'n safety have managed to turn what WAS a magical experience into a merely mundane one.

Unless you are of a hiking bent across difficult and painful terrain, don't go far out of your way to visit.

“wow”
Reviewed February 11, 2013

spent only one day here but covered alot of ground in one day. This is a must do if visiting the big island. If you can only get one thing in make sure its volcano national park. We drove the whole thing and took lots of the hikes ( we arrived early and spent the night) a must do. We went back that evening before dinner up to the jaggar museum and took pictures of the volcano erupting how cool. This is a must do don't miss it.

“Worth the trip to Hawaii”
Reviewed February 10, 2013

This is a one-of-a-kind option, so get there early and enjoy the entire day there (bring a picnic). It can be hot, so wear a hat and bring suntan oil. The views are amazing, the visitor center educational, and it's big enough to not feel crowded, like every place else in Hawaii.

“Beautiful & Educational”
Reviewed February 8, 2013

There are miles of trails, full of plants and wildlife always full of beauty. Many of the secrets of the formation of the Hawaiian Islands are hidden within here and can be explored. There are museums and park rangers available to help explain the sights .
