Spend an entire day (at least) driving around...amazing views! There's a great cell phone tour as well.

“A Walk on the Wild Side”
Reviewed November 14, 2012

When you think about it, this is an active volcano, with lava flowing out to the sea, and steam spewing from vents all around you. Seismographs record frequent movement. Yet, the visitors just keep arriving! This place is awesome! There are several trails of different lengths to chose from. Remember to always have closed toe shoes. A drink and some insect repellant would be wise to have. But, before you head out, stop at the visitor center for the latest information. There is an art gallery a short walk from the visitor center and the artwork is top notch. I visit the park and the art gallery every time I am on the Big Island. It's worth the drive.

“Active Volcano--hello!”
Reviewed November 13, 2012

Really, how many other active volcanoes will you see in your lifetime. If you go to the Big Island and do not see the volcano, there is something wrong with you (that being said, if there is something medically wrong with you, check with your doctor before inhaling all the sulfur--eek!). Right now it is so easy to see the Volcano that anyone can get in on the action. Just drive up to the Jaggar Museum. Park. Follow the sidewalk to the big smoking pit and few nature in action. View it at night to see the orange glow. Look up and see the beautiful sky above as well. NOTE FOR RIGHT NOW (NOVEMBER 2012): THE LAVA IS SUPPOSED TO REACH THE OCEAN AGAIN SOON!! Check the HVO daily (http://hvo.wr.usgs.gov/activity/kilaueastatus.php) to see if the lava can bee seen flowing into the ocean. If so, you must go see that in some way. It is amazing. I hiked out to it 10 years ago and will never forget the experience. Nowadays, I'd probably take the lava boat to see it.
Aside from seeing the actively flowing or bubbling lava, Thurston Lava Tube is cool, the petroglyphs are a more difficult walk, but also neat, and the sea arch is always good for some great photography. There are also many points in the park for really cool photographs of the southern end of the island. Again, you cannot go to this island without going to the park. Also, head out to the Kalapana viewing area to see who is still living in the active flow zones. Very few original houses remain and some have built new houses. A few of the new houses have been overtaken by lava. Ask the county security guys to tell you a little about the history--they seem more than happy to be tour guides.

“This is an amazing experience on the Big Island”
Reviewed November 13, 2012

This was our first trip to Volcanoes National Park and it was great. This is a must for anyone visiting the Big Island. The park rangers are very knowledgeable and helpful in suggesting the best places to go in the amount of time you have. We stayed until after dark and were able to see the extremely bright glow of the lava (that was about 100 feet down the crater at the time we were there). Do not do what we did and forget to take a jacket with you; it gets cold up there after the sun goes down, especially when the wind is blowing as it was the night we were there.

Awesome park and museum. If your on the big island a must see. Drive up, book a tour just go. The drive up is worth it alone. The crater view from the museum is awesome.
