“Easy Nature Walk with lots to see and learn”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 28, 2013

My mom and I bought a guide booklet to the Kipuka Puaulu bird park trail at the information center and shop at the Volcanoes National Park. We originally thought it was accessible from within the park but then found you have to go back to the main road and drive about 5 miles to get to entrance but it was well worth it. The walk is peaceful, easy -- even for seniors - and includes informative signage along the way about what you are seeing. It includes the history of the park - which was grasslands for cows 100 years ago and has been returned to it natural state, by removing all non native plants and as many of the animals as possible. The result is an incredible tropical forest, full of birds and native plants, with lots of information on the history of the park and the efforts that have been made to preserve it. Quite an incredible story.

“Great little walk with the birds”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 14, 2013

Mostly aimed at birders, this little hike has birds galore! We were there early in the morning, and were treated to a bird song symphony. The hike itself is easy and almost entirely in the shade. A must see for birders and other nature nerds :)

“Lovely, peaceful forest trail”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 2, 2013

We enjoyed the pheasants (even though they were once imported from Asia) and the shady, green environment. Such a contrast from the stark lava landscapes in other parts of the park. Yes, we also heard way more birds than we were able to see, but it was fun listening and looking for them. Beautiful spot!

“Easy nature walk”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 13, 2013

We love this kind of thing- non crowded, easy loop trail, lots of trees and birds, and plenty of opportunity to spot some fungus. Ample parking. Pay $2 for a guidebook and take the easy paved trail. We saw tons of invasive pheasant, they may be a bit aggressive and come looking for hand outs. We didn't see another person on the trail the whole time, very private and quiet.

We also did the drive further up Mauna Loa. Interesting, winding, some questionable pavement conditions but still do-able in a rental car. It was a looong drive to the start of the hiking trail, but the view was nice. If you have some time to kill and are searching for some solitude, take the drive.
