Owner description: A moderate 4 mile hike into a an old volcanic crater.

This is the best part about the whole visit to the park. Seriously, take a day to spend at the park. Hike this trail and walk over the crater. It's amazing and you will seriously be missing out if you don't do it! You can see steam vents and walk right over a lava lake. On the way down and on the way up you will hike through lush, beautiful rainforest. You may want to take a rain shell with you...it rains often in the park. We did this hike first, which took a couple of hours, then went to the Thurston Lava Tube, then drove down the hwy to sea and looked at many sites along the way. We checked out the sea arch and then walked to where the lava flow goes over the road. We drove back up and out of the park, went to Volcano Village and ate dinner at the Lava Rock Cafe (I highly recommend) and then went back into the park to see the glowing red magma once it got dark. Very cool. Bring warm clothing...it gets really chilly!!

If you were to choose one hike to do on the Big Island, let it be the Kilauea Iki Trail at Volcano National Park. It's a four mile total hike including Thurston Lava Tube. I did it with my children who range from 8 to 14. Many publications recommend a counter clock wise loop which I highly recommend as well. This way you start with a stroll through a tropical forest with scenic views of the crater below. From there it takes you down into the crater where the walk feels surreal as you walk on volcanic rock as steam is released from the floor vents around you. As you loop back up to the top of the crater, the path leads you to Thurston Lava Tube. No need to worry as they installed lights throughout the tube. A great hike...the whole family loved it. It was the highlight of the whole vacation...along with watching the glow of the lava from Jagger Museum at dusk.

It s a nice short trail. A small child can do this. It was raining when we did this so our shoes got muddy. Nothing is visible from the crater during a rainy day.

People may groan about it being 4 miles but we found the hike to be quite easy. We stopped and took many pictures and played around near the steam vents and still did it in an hour and a half. I really wish I could have seen that 1959 eruption in person, it must have been spectacular! Do the hike, you won't regret it.
