“tough but worth it”

climb down into a dormant volcano and walk across the lava plain, still emitting gases everywhere. go early in the morning as it might get brutally hot down there, no shade. take plenty of water

“Well Worth the Effort!”
Reviewed February 25, 2013

It's hard to write something that hasn't been said already about this outstanding hike. It truly is special and worth every effort (though if you take it slow it's not all that hard). This far exceeded our expectations! One minute you are in a rain forest and the next it is as if you are on the moon with active steam vents. By the way, if it rains the steam vents become more active.

One tip that really helped us to enjoy this location was to first watch the movie at the Visitor's Center that details the original eruption here in 1959. We were able to understand and appreciate what we were seeing and walking through so much better.

“Beautiful & informative hike”
Reviewed February 17, 2013

Remember to pick up the information sheet on about this trail. There are markers along the way that are explained on the sheet which helps to complete the experience. Lots of great views of the active volcano while you get to explore what the inside of an older section of the volcanic area. Remember to bring water, sunscreen, and your camera.

“Did it!!”
Reviewed February 16, 2013

Don't miss this if you have the time......like walking across the moon. I'm 61 years old...in good shape, and this was not a hard hike. Carry plenty of water and a camera. The first and last part of the hikes are through forests....the rest is unbelieveable. Like walking on the moon....it makes you not only realize the power of volcanoes, but the reality of the aftermath years later. It is unique and beautiful in it's own rite.

“must do”
Reviewed February 11, 2013

This is a must do while at the volcano. We enjoyed our time here with this hike. We did the whole thing, took the whole loop very cool. Once you go to the volcano you get a better perspective about the whole island and makes you appreciate it. You must go to the volcano national park or your not seeing the big island. very cool!!!
