Owner description: A moderate 4 mile hike into a an old volcanic crater.
Reviewed April 1, 2012

You will hike down a pretty moderate trail into a formerly active volcano crater. You come out of the rain forest into what seems to be the surface of the moon. I recommend taking the trail on a moderate day. Extreme temperatures are intensified on the Iki.

Our hotel host (Dolphin Bay Hotel) suggested this as a must do hike and he was correct. Wow this was a great 4 mile hike... 40 stories down... 40 stories up. Ends with the Thurston Lava tubes... Was perfect for two sisters in their 50's .. we loved the adventure

If you only have time to get in one hike while visiting the park, this is the hike you need to do, The 4 mile loop will take you just over 2 hours and totally worth the trip. Reminder, go counter clockwise on the trail as its easier going in that direction.

If you can only do one hike its the best. about 2-3 hours. Start in the rain forest and descend to the crater bed. Make sure to pick up a trail guide for a buck at the ranger station. It will explain all the numbered portions of the trail. It allows you to really visualize what the crater was like as a giant lava lake.

Not much more to add than what others have said, but the variety of sights and terrain on this not very taxing hike makes it a must do if you go to Volcanoes NP. Just make sure you wear decently treaded shoes and take a rain jacket or poncho!
