After recovering from the 2am wake up call, my family really enjoyed the excursion.
We planned ahead and brought clothing to help keep us warm in the pre-dawn hours atop the crater, so the cold weather wasn't an issue.
It is a very easy ride (you brake way more than you pedal), but you need to confident on a bike. The road is open to automobiles and you have to maneuver several tight turns.
Stay alert, don't get mesmerized by the views and you will have a great ride.

We arrived on time and the Haleakala Bike Tour team was waiting and ready to go! They provided all the necessary rain gear, back packs, helmets, and gloves in preparation of a glorious sunrise and exciting 22 mile down hill bike ride. There are two choices: 1) The guided tour and 2) Self-Guided Tour. Since we're experienced cyclists, the self guided tour was the way to go. Their bikes are custom made mountain bikes just for the tour company. Mountain bikes complete with 9 gears, disk brakes, and rock shocks, it was the perfect bike for a fast and hard downhill run. Pistol Pete and Jackie were awesome!

Awesome experience! Breathtaking views! Our guide Marlen was fantastic. We were a small group so Marlen took the extra time to give us a personal tour of the sites.
As far as the bike ride - please note that although you do not need to be a very experienced cyclist, the road is quite treacherous. You will be riding downhill the majority of the way (fast) around blind corners and on narrow roads. You will also bike through small villages.
The bike company gives you excellent gear and safety tips.

My husband and I loved the summit tour and are glad we paid for this portion of the tour instead of just doing the bike ride. We really enjoyed going into the park, seeing the view from the top of Mt. Haleakala including the surrounding islands, and seeing the summit and crater. The bike trip down was also a lot of fun. There weren't as many places to stop along the way as I had expected, but we had a nice lunch and the views were great. Our tour guide for the summit tour was wonderful too.

This was a really great experience. I felt like we were really well prepared for this (in terms of the cold, etc.) thanks to the information provided up-front by Bike Maui before we even booked the tour. Our guide Bill was crazy, but in the most amazing and fun way. He was so knowledgeable about the crater and the whole area, which added a lot to the experience. He really went above and beyond taking us to the observation point at the top after the sunrise, and he did everything he could to advise us on getting the best photos, etc. of the experience. He also made sure we were clear on the bike route back to the shop by pointing out key points and turns throughout the ride up, and through repetition of those key points. He provided us with maps, but thanks to his verbal guidance we never had to distract ourselves by pulling them out because we knew the way back.
