It’s about an hour to drive up to the summit, but it’s well worth it. It is like being on top of the world. It was overcast and rainy at the beach, but clear and sunny at the top the day we went up.

If you go to Maui you can not miss going up early before sun comes up at Haleakala volcano.
The national park service has now made it mandatory to get reservations in order to visit Haleakala from 3am to 7am. The reason is the crowds were crowded. After 7am you can go up any time. There is a $25 national park entry fee. If you are 62 or older and have a national park pass it is free.

The views are something to behold.
The history of the volcano is great history as well.

You will very happy if you visit the volcano during your visit to Maui.

Initially went for the sunrise but cloud cover completely spoilt it!!! However the $25 dollar pass gives you 3 days access, so we went back during the day on a different day for beautiful views and also hiked part of the trail that goes into the crater.
For sunrise, you need to book you place online before you go and make sure you wrap up warm since it may be 80 degrees at the coast but it was around 49 degrees when we got there. Also be aware that you are at 10000 feet. Make sure you get there at least 45 minutes before sunrise time since it gets very crowded.
The drive is quite enjoyable but tricky if you are not used to driving in narrow winding roads with lots of hairpins with no barriers and steep cliffs.

This is a must-do while in Maui and totally justified - the scenery was gorgeous and the sunrise extraordinary. Make sure to bundle up though, it was not only freezing but the wind made it even more so.
