This is an amazing place you have to see on this planet. I left the resort in Lahaina before sunrise where it was 84 F and at the top of the crater it was 36F, make sure you take a jacket!

Staying in Kihei it took us over 2 hours to drive up. You'll drive thru clouds and watch the scenery change from lush green to partly green to barren rock. The temperature drops significantly on the drive up so bring a jacket and put the jeep top back on, especially in the morning. Bike tours going down hill are popular, especially after the sunrise tour, so be sure to share the road. We had a lot of clouds in our initial photos of the crater but if you're patient they will move around and you can get beautiful shots.

The long and twisted road up was quite a trip, the views were stunning. I recommend gum to clear your ears on the way up and down.

Got up real early to make it to the top for the sunrise. The sunrises from below the clouds giving you a spectacular light show, as a golden river appears! It is freezing up there, and you may even see ice, so if you don't have winter clothes, do like we did and take the blanks from the hotel room. Would do the bike ride next time, it liked like a lot of fun passing them on the way down!
