We really enjoyed this attraction. The ride to the summit was winding and scary at times. The view from on top of the world was well worth it. The sun setting amongst the clouds was amazing.

Haleakala crater was very good but the sunset was everything to write home about -really spectacular but all the more so due to Henry, our excellent guide and bus driver, and the rest of the service provided by Polynesian Adventures. Highly recommend

This is definitely worth the drive with friends or family! We took our kids for the afternoon and where amazed at how high we were and the views we saw. Plan to take a picnic, some drinks and some hoodies to wear as it gets very cool when the sun goes down. The sunset was amazing to watch and th Stars were sooo magnificent too.

- We missed it only because we found the app later but to make this a great trip use the Gypsy Guide app to get you there the commentary makes the trip a whole different experience.

- Check the weather first we lucked out with a beautiful day but the following day it was cloudy and after the long drive it would have been a let down to have missed some of the views that would have been blocked by the clouds.

- I have driven up mountains before but this one had me a bit on edge. There are steep drop offs with no guard rails. I would have considered a bus trip but we rented the car and thought how bad can this be?

- Keep in mind as with many things it is the journey and not necessarily the destination.

-Your park sticker is good at any National park for 3 consecutive days so search out the other park to make use of your entry free

You must stop at the visitor center and pay $25 entrance fee. A map is available if you want to hike.

The drive to Haleakala crater is long with sharp twists and turns and no guard rails...there are people who also bike up and down the road making the drive dangerous in spots.

Once at the top the views are spectacular and it is absolutely worth the drive. You do not have to drive at sun-rise or sun-set to appreciate the beauty, during the afternoon you will be treated to a spectacular view also.

We visited the crater for the sunset. We booked the excursion from the cruise ship. We thought this would be a really memorable event to ring in our anniversary. The drive up to the crater gave us a taste of Maui. Nice landscapes and some pretty homes. Once we arrived the destination lacked the WOW factor. Albeit, the scenery was pretty, the clouds were interesting and the crater had some good colour but it was not anything remarkable. The elevation didn't bother us and the cool air was a nice reprieve from the hot and humid climate below. We had about 40 minutes to explore the crater (essentially a walk around at the top) and take some photos. We drove back to the cruise ship in the dark. All in all it was essentially a very expensive bus ride.

The ride up was scary, but worth it. We drove though rain, fog and clouds, each different from the other. When we got to the crater if I could guess what the moon would look like this would be it. The light from the clouds, the color of the different areas of the crater and the few plants just mesmerized me. I took a lot of photos, but realized I could stay all day and each photo would be be different and show something new within the stark landscape. The only advice I will pass on is the temperature above does not always match the weather at sea level. Bring warmer clothing/jacket for early or late visits.

Walk into this immense crater. Try to imagine it in the not to distant past filled with plumes of smoke, explosions, and lava flows. Weather changes fast. It can be perfectly clear then cloud over with thick fog. Respect the fragile ecosystem and stay on the trails!
