This is the only place in the world you can be at sea level and two hours later your 10,000 feet up.Incredible drive through the clouds, the air smells much cleaner and once your up there, wow, what a sight to see!Leaves you speechless ,wishing you had a house with those backyard views.Life changing.

OK - if you are traveling from the east coast do this one of the first days in Maui... that way getting up at 4AM to drive to the top won't hurt so bad. We do this each time we go to Maui and it is always one of our favorite things to do. Take warm clothes, it is cold up at the top. It is probably one of my favorite things to do and each year we do it and the kids get older it's a new experience. On the way back down we stop at Krispy Kremer - we don't have them in our area anymore and it's a hit with teenagers. You have to do this trip.

My wife and I have made journey to see the sunrise on the top of Haleakala twice, once in 2008 and again in 2010. We left our condo and It took 2 and a half hours or so to get to the top from Honokowai. We arrived early but parking at the top spot was already starting to fill up by 4:30 or so. We sat in our car for a while and just watched the shooting stars and easily saw two dozen in an hour or so. At the top is an observation room that protects you from the wind but we stood outside infront and watched the sunrise, it was amazing. It is also a good place to meet fellow travelers and even some locals.

One word of advise is that it's very windy and chilli, the temp was in the mid 30's. We brought long pants and a blanket the and were fine, although some people were in full parkas with face masks and everything.

Pictures just don't do this experience justice. Left Kehei at 315AM to head up to Haleakala. Interesting and fun drive up to the top. Cost is a 10$USD to enter into the National Park for a 3 days admission. Arrived approximately 15minutes before the sunrise. There are many tours that offer this experience or your could drive up. If you make it there 30 minutes prior I recommend making a short hike up to see the sunrise as a more seclusive location. (Otherwise expect at least 100+ other people chattering away) It is definitely cold like other reviewers had mentioned. Being from British Columbia it was windy and cold even for us. (Wind breaker, hoodie, long sleeve, sweat pants, thermal layer) After watching the sunrise you can take the hike down to the crater and back up. This is a strenuous hike so make sure you bring enough water! The time you take hiking down is x2 the duration to hike back up. Well worth it in my mind if you ask me. If you're not physically fit or on a time limit I still recommend taking sometime to hike a short ways as the view changes even with a bit of distance!

Having seen the live volcano on the Big Island, the Haleakala Crater is a disappointment. Since we have nothing else to do that day, we decided to drive up for a visit. But if you have visited other volcanoes, you can skip this one. On the way up, one of the cars flipped over and was totaled. Pity the lady driver who may have to pay for the damaged car if she has no insurance. Drive carefully, don't rush.
