I love this road. Drive it early, late, during the day. It always seems different. Beep when you go through tunnels its tradition.

This is the road that divides the GSMNP. In my opinion, this road has the BEST views of the national park! We did hikes, trams, and sky lifts, but the views did not get better than in our Jeep on the Newfound Gap Road! Amazing!!!

We planned to spend the entire day driving down and back on Newfound Gap Road. We stopped at Clingman's Dome (with the 1/2 mile hike up and back), drove down to Cherokee, stopped for short visit, drove back up and stopped to visit the mill (a lovely visit), where we watched corn meal and flour being ground (you can also buy it there), with a very easy hike around the area. There are also toilets and running water at the site. We then drove a while and stopped at a pull over site and ate lunch on the river (we found a large rock in the center to sit on). It was near the road, yet very peaceful with the running water. We enjoyed watching the fish and looking at the beautiful rocks. We ventured on to Laurel Falls and took that 1 1/4 mile steep walk as well during this trip. We then decided it was time to go to our hotel. This roadway is easy to go down and back in a day with a hike or two, depending on how far you wish to hike. Be prepared to drive slowly at times with traffic as you can not pass. It is nice when people who drive slower pull over to let others drive by, however we only experienced this kind gester once. So, please think of others when you drive this road and pull off if you begin to hold up traffic.

The Newfound Gap Road is a beautiful drive through the Smoky Mountains. Along the drive, there are many pull-outs to stop and view the scenery and to take pictures. We did the drive in the morning, and there was very little traffic. I definitely recommend doing this drive early, as you will have most of the rode and pull-outs to yourself. When we drove back through in the afternoon, the road was extremely busy and pull-outs crowded. One of the highlights of the drive was seeing a coyote running in the rode and then into the bush.

I never tire of driving through the Smoky Mountain National Park. Whatever season, it is breathtaking, However the real treat is when you take the time to venture off into the Park itself, beyond the sound of motor noise. A two hour hiking trip from the Gap takes you along the Appalachian Trail to Charlie's Bunions, one of the most beautiful scenic spots in the world.

Don't settle for seeing only what you can see from the seat of your car!!:-)
