We love coming to Cades Cove. It is so beautiful and we love seeing the wildlife and hike the trails. Our big problem is that we have purchased a Yorkie who is bonded to us like a human child and we can't use any of the hiking trails. I would love it if management in the cove could see clear to opening up at least a couple of trails for people like us who are retired and are very close to their dog. We simply can not leave him in a kennel. It would be like leaving a child.

Plan to spend a few hours (3-4) if you want to stop at some of the turnouts along the way. Very scenic drive with the river alongside the road most of the way. There is a lot of traffic so plan on being patient...bring drinks/snacks and make it a picnic while driving! Wildlife seen is mostly deer but we did have the great luck to see a momma bear w/2 babies. Make sure you have your cameras ready!

We drove into Cades Cove at 6 PM and left at 9 PM. If you want to see the cabins and other structures at length, you must drive through in the day. If you want to see the animals, you must drive through in the evening to leave at night. There was apparently a mother bear with three cubs, but greedy observers took up all the camera footage. We actually only moved twenty feet in one hour. We are the type of observers that move to the side to let the rushed observers pass by us, so it was not like we were in a rush.Take a picture and move on should be a common rule at this attraction. That's why there is really one choice to make: drive through during the day or night.

We have been to the Smoky Mountains several times and just last week returned once again from our home in Ohio. We stayed in a cabin between Townsend and Pigeon Forge, it was about 45-minutes from Cades Cove. During our 4-day stay we visited Cades Cove 3 times and all 3 times we seen an abundance of wildlife along with breathtaking views of the mountains.
Our highlight was seeing a momma bear and her 3 cubs, the 3 cubs were playing on the tree climbing up and down ( see picture ), we also seen numerous wild turkey and deer and also one coyote.
Do yourself a favor and visit Cades Cove .. it is AMAZING and so relaxing to drive around the 11-mile scenic loop road, if you see a big traffic jam you'll know someone spotted a bear :)
