We love Roaring Fork! It's about a 9 mile loop and takes awhile to get around especially if there's lots of traffic, but we never care. The drive is very mountainous and there are several hiking trails. This year we took the trail to Grotto Falls. It took us about 1 hr., but we had our 3 & 4 yr. old grandchildren, who by the way loved it too. At the top is a waterfall that you can walk under and get great pictures. We were fortunate enough to see a moma bear and her cubs while on the trail and a larger bear on the road later. The kids were so excited. The favorite trail was at the Ogle place just as you enter the Fork. It's a 1.3 mile trail, but not so hilly. There's an old cabin, barn and grist mill to explore and the river is refreshing for tired feet. There's no charge for travel on the trails or drive, but no dogs are allowed. It is located just outside of Gatlinburg (near where we stayed) and we went 3 times in the afternoon while we were there. I can't imagine anyone not loving Roaring Fork Motor Trail.

Do drive down when you are in smokey. We stayed in a hotel in pigeon forge & did back n forth everyday for all the sightseeing. This was a beautiful scenic one-way drive. We visited in on July4th weekend this year & it was raining those days, due to which the forest was lush green & rivers were in full flow. There are 2 waterfalls on the way, Rainbow falls & Grotto falls. Rainbow falls trail is around 3miles each side & Trillium Gap trail which leads to Grotto falls is 1.4miles each side. We did Trillium gap trail.

This is called a Motor nature trail and that is exactly what it is. It looks just like a trail but its wide enough for a car. (my kind of hiking!) We were fortunate enough to see a turkey on the side of the road and that was really cool. It was not crowded at all when we went and there are numerous pull offs if you want to stop and take pictures or let cars go around you so you can go slower.
There are also several streams and a waterfall.

The kids and adults all enjoyed this very peaceful trail. Great photos were taken there! Some of the trees were labeled to identify them. The greenery, the trees, the sounds......it was all very welcoming after other busy days we had on this vacation

Our 15 year old grandson was with us and he loved it. He took over 200 pictures of the trails and waterfalls and thought it was beautiful and he's not into driving and looking. Take your time as you drive through, you won't want to miss any of the gorgeous scenery. It is breathtaking.
