Spectacular view at the highest point in the Smokey Mountains! You'll definitely want your camera !! Appalachian trails to hike as well. Saw my first bear in person, he was a cub clinging on a tree. Also came upon two big blue butterflies on the trail. They were just laying on a slab of rock and they were so close I could touch them. It was a very wonderful hike with lots of wild life and beauty all around!

At 6643 feet high, this was a steep but steady scenic drive up to the car park, followed by a tough climb up to the view point. Plenty of stopping points on the walk up, which you need, just to catch your breath. We followed the advice of the guide books & took a bottle water, which helped tremendously. The view from the lookout was fantastic, but as we were literally up in the clouds, we were soon surrounded by them and our 360degree view wiped out. Only the tops of the trees below us remained visible. Still, it was well worth it. I would definitely recommend it.

It's a surprisingly steep half-mile hike up the wide paved path to the observation platform on top of Clingmans Dome. Unless you just finished a triathlon, you'll be huffing and puffing on your way up. There are quite a few benches to rest on so just take your time and look forward to the 360 degree view at the top. On a clear day (our day was partly clear) you can see all the way to Mount Mitchell! There are guide markers on the platform identifying the different peaks in all directions. The most dramatic observation is the large number of stark dead tree trunks, the result of the plague of wooly adelgid on the magnificent hemlocks in the forest.

The 1/2 mile hike is strenuous. Many people hiked this journey to the top stopping along the way. Their determination to the top gave them the view that makes the walk worthwhile. Standing in the dome and seeing the clouds traverse over the top was enchanting. Seeing the firs destroyed by pests showed how easily the balance can be tipped. The day was beautiful and in the 70s. Perfect weather with sun anc clouds. I would recommend this journey.

We we're camping and my daughter wanted to go up to Clingmans Dome. I asked is the road ok, and she said yes its good. The road was very good but i really didn't know how high we we're going. It was so beautiful but i'm scared of heights so i took some peaks at the scenery and it was gorgeous!! We finally made it to the parking lot and it was covered in clouds, we were worried we wouldn't see much. We trudged up the path, it was steep and made it to the observation area. Made it to the top and enjoyed the wonderful views. The only problem we had to drive back down, still beautiful and scary. We loved it.
