I've driven Little River Road many times. It's one of my favorite drives in GSMNP, and we were looking forward to a leisurely day of driving, stopping, walking, photographing, and enjoying the sites and sounds of the river on our latest visit to the park. Then came October 1 and the government shutdown. We scrambled to find other ideas since our hikes in the national park were no longer an option and our favorite road was closed. Thanks to posts on the Trip Advisor forum, we found out that foot traffic WAS being allowed on the road, even though it was closed to vehicular traffic.
We got to spend a day walking this beautiful road with no vehicles (we saw only 4 park rangers while we were out) and few other people. Having the road to ourselves without fear of passing cars or impatient drivers meant we could explore the nooks and crannies that you don't see from a car. We found some great cascades and were able to scramble up the hillside for more exploring. We had our lunch sitting on a huge boulder riverside. Found a couple of places with stairs leading down to the river. It was an amazing experience, and I'm thankful for the rare opportunity to take a walk down Little River Road.
