I like a hike that has a destination and isn't too strenuous so I can enjoy the journey. We took the Woodland Trail to Phelps Lake, which was the perfect hike for the afternoon. It gently ascended through trees and occasional meadows. As the trail crossed the road, we saw a crowd of people stopped to watch a bear lolling around in a clearing.
The lake itself is beautiful, and was a great place to sit, relax, and enjoy the scenery before heading back. This hike was a fun intro to GTNP, and would be suitable for most any age/ability.
As the previous reviewer noted, Laurance Rockefeller's gift is truly appreciated. The visitor center helped me to understand more about him and his philosophy.

As I walked the trail aroung this peaceful and beautiful lake, I was thinking of the thank you note I wanted to write to the generous man for giving this property to the people for us to experience so it would resonate with our spirits and inspire us all to save these lands for just this reason. He spoke of how we needed these places to retreat to from the hustle and bustle of our urban lives. You will understand what he meant as you tread the forest floor on the banks of the lake where he and his family had vacationed for years. Now it is yours so please visit it and send him a thank you as you feel your lungs breath that fresh air and your spirit soar with the exhilaration of being in nature. And if you are lucky, as we were, you will see a black bear busily foraging for food in the forest. Be sure to go to the Visitors Center and sit in the sound room where all you hear are the sounds of the animals, birds, nature that are a part of this gift Mr. Rockefeller gave all of us.

After having a bear encounter on the Ice Lake Trail in Yellowstone, I thought this trail that started at the Nature Preserve on Moose Wilson Road would be one that would not scare me, but I was wrong. This is a beautiful trail, but with bears reported to be in the area, even carrying Bear Spray could not make this trip feel safe. After hearing noises that sounded like twigs snapping ahead on the trail, I had to head back. Just a beautiful place, but don't hike it without your Bear Spray!

This easy loop trail is not to be missed! A guide on a float trip recommended this hike for us and our two boys, 10 and 14. The views and scenery were breathtaking. When we reached the lake, there was a volunteer ranger there to answer questions and showed us pictures of the Rockefeller residence that used to be their private retreat. We even ended up stumbling across a black bear sow and her two cubs right in the middle of the trail by Huckleberry Point, which startled us, but we seemed of no concern to her. Nevertheless, that was the end of the trail for us and we turned around and headed back. If you want a hike with unbelievable beauty, that is pretty much flat and easy, this is the one. The parking lot is monitored, so if it is full, you will have to wait until someone leaves before they will let you park. Go early to avoid this.

Traveling with our four year old granddaughter we are always looking for an easy hike that she can enjoy! The hike to Phelps Lake was enjoyed by all of us. The mile and half hike to the lake did not have much elevation and the path was very well marked. The lake is beautiful surrounded by the Tetons. The wilderness trail back to the visitor center was again easy and well marked. The park keeps the crowds down with the small parking lot. We hiked on a Thursday afternoon and had no trouble finding a place to park.
