I chose this location for its easy access to Yellowstone, lower elevation (warmer at night), and great views next to the lake. We arrived on a Wednesday mid afternoon in late August, and were surprised that half the sites were taken. Most of the sites at Lizard Creek Campground are great - adjacent to the lake or adjacent to the forest. My girlfriend and I were able to take a walk into the forest with our portable shower and strip down to nothing and shower in privacy, just a few minutes from our tent. (No shower facilities here). It was 20 minutes into Yellowstone.
The site did fill up 100% by late afternoon, however was half empty the following day. If you arrive by 2pm, you should be fine. We left on a Friday which was strangely empty. The facilities were clean - flush toilets.
We had a large tent and the ground was perfect - flat, easy to place and remove stakes. Bear box, picnic table. Overall, I would come back to this spot in a heartbeat.
