“Colter Bay Cabins Lack Privacy”
Reviewed September 8, 2007

A lot of what people write here is true. Access to activities and the outdoors and the rusticity of the accommodations were exactly what we wanted. But no matter how clean and neat the presentation or how beautiful the surroundings, the two nights spent there were spoiled by the fact that we could hear everything in the cabins that were back to back with ours. You will hear your neighbor's cabin door open and close. You will hear their regular, normal conversation-clear enough to dictate what they say word for word--as if you were holding a discussion with them. (And they will hear you just as clearly.) You will know every time they turn on the water, go to the bathroom, take a shower--you will hear the faucets handles turning. You will hear their chairs scrape on the linoleum floor (be sure to keep your socks on, the floor stays cold). You will hear them hang up their clothes and rearrange the hangers. And we were next to people who for the most part were behaving quite normally. We could only imagine what it would have been like to have insensitive people, or over-tired babies and kids, or honeymooners next to us--unless that's your sort of thing. We were lucky in that sense. And we were lucky to have spent as little time as possible inside.

My husband and 9 year old son stayed at this property on August 31, 2007 for one night. We stayed in a cabin with a double bed and a twin bed. The cabins are made of logs and have a rustic design. Parking spots are in front of the cabins. The reception desk is in a separate cabin within walking distance and is open 24 hours a day. There is internet service but it is very slow (it uses a modem).

The beds were very comfortable and the decor was traditional Western. The room was very clean. There is an electric heater, no A/C but I doubt you'll need it! The bathroom was clean and has a stall shower. Each cabin was connected with another cabin, however due to its design even though the walls were thin, you could only hear the neighbors from the bathroom, not the bedroom. There is no TV, radio or phone in the room and we had no cell phone service through T-Mobile and Verizon, but after all the hikes and activities you'll probably just want to go to sleep anyway!

The rate was very reasonable, we paid about 105 before tax. Meals are not included but we ate at the Cafe a short walk away for a decent price (Mexican and American food). There is also a restaurant attached to the Cafe that offers breakfast, lunch and dinner. The General Store is within walking distance and sells groceries, sandwiches and souvenirs for a reasonable price. Jackson Lake, the Indian Museum and the Amphitheater (check out their nightly programs) are all within walking distance. The Lake Trail is nearby and offers a scenic walk.

Be forewarned, it gets cold here at night! Even though it was late August, the temperature dropped to about 40 at night, so bring a thick sweater!

All in all we really enjoyed our stay here and strongly recommend this property to anyone wishing a reasonably priced, clean and cozy stay in Teton National Park.

We stayed at the Colter Bay Cabins for just one night on our way to another hotel, so unfortunately we did not get to take advantage of most of what it has to offer. However, we were impressed with what we saw. The accomodations are all cabins which, according to the information posted in the room are over 100 years old. It was fun and cozy to stay in our little cabin while a thunderstorm was going on outside (especially since the cabins have been wind and waterproofed and modern bathrooms have been added). Colter Bay had a very convenient grocery store on site (staffed by very friendly people) and very helpful desk clerks. Though we did not get to take advantage of them, it also had a restaurant, a marina where i think you can rent boats or at least go on boat tours, and numerous programs and activities. My impression of Colter Bay is that it would be a great place for families, though anyone could enjoy it. In addition it was inexpensive. At $85/night for a one bed cabin, it was the least expensive of 5 places that my husband and I stayed in throughout our trip to Glacier, Yellowstone, and Grand Tetons and it was probably our second favorite!

Our family of four (kids 8 and 10) stayed two nights in a two room Colter Bay cabin (#1055). The two rooms were separated by an entry hall and common bathroom with a shower. Each room contained two double beds, electric heater, desk, dresser and a closet. We liked the privacy of having separate rooms for the kids.

The cabin was clean and comfortable and had a nice rustic ambience.

The staff was friendly and efficient and offered some helpful suggestions for hikes nearby.

You can drive about 5 minutes to the Jackson Lake Lodge and use their heated pool -- nice after a long day of hiking or fishing.

Don't leave food in your car or on your porch as there is a lot of critters who will help themselves -- bears specifically.

Two restaurants are within walking distance as is the Colter Bay visitor center. We dined both nights at the Chuckwagon -- the second night they cooked up the trout we caught on Lake Jackson and it was tremendous.

Colter Bay Marina is within walking distance as well. They offer fishing charters and boat rentals on Jackson Lake. The Marina staff was very friendly and helpful.

There are some great short walks and hikes around the area and you can pickup a trail guide for 50 cents from several places.

  • Liked — Cozy, clean, comfortable -- great location
  • Disliked — Lacked a view of the mountains, but not a big deal for us.

We had a wonderful stay here....very convenient location. The cabin was very large and clean, the beds were comfortable, and the shower was the best of our whole trip to this area!
When I woke up in this cabin, I recalled all the Little House on the Prairie stories I had read, and for a minute felt like I had gone back in time.
Check in was great, and we had a nice boat ride that left from the Colter Bay Marina. There's everything you need in this location to enjoy the Tetons!

Our group stayed in two cabins for several nights in August. The cabins were fine ...as described by others ... rustic, sometimes noisy but clean and quaint. Colter Bay seems to cater to families with children - there were plenty of interesting ranger-led programs and hikes (we took the lake loop and 3.2 mile hikes) as well as numerous talks at the museum, swimming in the lake and just lounging around outside the cabin throwing pine cones. The general store had enough variety and quality for our food snob and the two on-site restaurants were fine for the children (but not great). We swam in the pool at the Lodge, a 10-minute drive away, and we enjoyed our rafting trip down the Snake river. We will return for the great hiking and scenery.

Having worked in the Tetons, I can tell you that this is one of the better deals in the park. You could pay much more and stay at Jackson Lake Lodge cabins for a little nicer accomodations. Or pay much much more and stay at Jackson Lodge or Jenny Lake. But for the price, the Colter Bay cabins are a good deal, given the high prices in and around the parks.
Accomodations are simple: ranging from 1 double to multiple beds. The room is spacious and shares a wall with an adjoining cabin. You can close a door that wil separate you from that wall though. Bathroom is small, but sufficient. Very clean and Colter Bay has laundry facilities, a restaurant, marina, and grocery store. No TV in the room, but as long as you're not sick...you should be out exploring. :)
