Maswik Lodge
Reviewed April 1, 2013

We stayed here for one night as part of the tour. Being part of the tour meant that we got the cheaper room or the room without a view. So that meant we got the south rooms. We were room 6658, ground floor, in building 4, the last building behind the main lodge.

There is free Wi-Fi, in the main lodge but it was difficult to connect and once connected, really slow. Great thing about national parks is the potable water station in the lodges!

Our room 6658 has two queen beds. Also in the room was a fridge, coffee maker, wall-mounted fans (no AC).

In the bathroom area (sink is outside the toilet and bathtub room), there is the usual amenities of soap, lotion, shampoo, hairdryer and plenty of towels. The lotion, shampoo, soap and conditioner is wall mounted and smells divine! Also on sale in the gift store, $10 each bottle. The sink is very low, if you're very tall, you would have to be bent nearly in half.

We went during the cooler weather so not quite needing the fan but it did get stuffy without circulating air that a running AC (had there been one) would've been nice to have. Otherwise, very nice room, furniture a little dated but who's here for the furnishings?! The lodge was about 5-8 minute walk from the Grand Canyon rim, right by Bright Angel Lodge.

We were booked here as part of a package tour to the Grand Canyon. This is one of the lodges on property. I chose the lower end room, so did not expect a lot of amenities. It had basic tv, was clean and comfortable, coffee maker etc. The only issue was a leak over the toilet from the ceiling, I suppose water from a shower upstairs. It was not constant, and I never reported it, although I should have. It was not a huge bother. The issue for us was the walking. We did not have a car, and the lodge was pretty far from the lobby and restaurant. Actually, the entire Grand Canyon park is that way, it is not for the infirm. It seems to be ADA compliant, and we are not in that category, but nonetheless, a traveller should beward that a lot of walking is involved, some is quite hilly and over uneven terrain.

Room Tip: Be careful choosing rooms at the canyon lodges. If the traveller has any issues with walking, find...

As many reviewers have commented, I would agree that the rooms are pretty basic by today's standards, with somewhat dated furnishings, but we still found our stay quite comfortable. The beds were not as deluxe as many higher-end places, but the room was clean and cozy for the two nights we spent. For us, the room was mainly just a place to sleep and clean up, as we spent most of our time outside.

We had deer right outside our door as we unloaded the car, and saw another herd next to the road on one of our walks back from the canyon. Obviously, the real bonus its that the Lodge is only about a five minute walk to the edge of the canyon, and conveniently located on the bus route that takes you most places you may want to see.

The meals I had at the cafeteria were pretty good. Breakfasts were prepared to order, and the pizza/pub had decent BBQ wings, pizza and a small selection of micro-brews on tap. After a long day of hiking, that worked for me.

We spent three nights in the Maswick Lodge and loved it. It was very clean, comfortable and the staff was very friendly and helpful. I would recommend this lodge to any families. The walk to the rim was not far and everything was easy to find. The cafeteria was nice and reasonably priced. We loved the whole south rim too!!!!

Room Tip: We stayed in the hotel section and it was most comfortable.

We stayed here for a night with our two kids. The lodge was just as we expected - clean but not fancy. Well worth staying in the park. We were lucky to get a night in the park - I tried a few times and someone must've cancelled. Staff is friendly. Great breakfast at Bright Angel Restaurant.

Our family stayed two nights in one of the standard units. Outside of the Grand Canyon, this is an average to below average accommodation. Dated and tired. But inside the Park, it's a very convenient location for enjoying the Grand Canyon. We spent most of our time hiking in the Canyon and enjoying the outdoors. The food court at Maswik and restaurants at Bright Angel Lodge are very reasonably priced and convenient. We tried the Arizona Room for dinner the first night, but the wait was nearly two hours. Go early or go late. We went late the second night for dessert. Excellent service and food quality. Can't wait to go back to the Grand Canyon. Will book early at El Tovar or Bright Angel Lodge on the rim for our next visit.

We stayed two nights, it was exactly what we thought we would get for the price we paid.

Clean rooms, comfy bed and great location to the canyon. Food options a little limited but fine for breakfast. Staff at the front desk were all very helpful and friendly.
