“Grand Canyon visit in November”
Reviewed December 11, 2012

Pleasantly suprised with this facility. November was a great time to go to the Grand Canyon. The South rim was still amazingly busy but not nearly as much as in the summer. The weather was beautiful and the sunsets and sunrise were incredible! The Maswik lodge is a very large facility and I didn't expect much. I wanted to spend the time at the canyon and couldn't afford El Tovar or any of the other facilities so Maswik it was! Really nice update room - make sure to pay the few dollars extra for the more spacious north rooms at least with the winter rates it was most affordable. We stayed at in the Juniper Lodge which is just off the train track (didn't have any issues with train noise since train travel is limited into the park) Only issue we had was that the heater was rather difficult to keep regulated. The cafeteria in the main building is a bit chaotic and nothing special but it does offer a place to get food at a nearby facility and it wasn't bad.

Deciding to stay inside the Grand Canyon National Park on the South Rim, we chose Maswik Lodge as this was the only place available 4 months in advance. After reading lot of reviews on the forum /tripadvisor, we tried to get reservations for the other lodges in the Park, but didn’t succeed. On arrival we realized that we had a good deal all along. We stayed on the North side of the Lodge property where the rooms were spacious and well equipped with a mini fridge, TV and almost enough towels. The Shuttle bus stops are located close by. Unlike the Kachina and Bright Angel lodges where the mornings are busy due to the rush to see the sun-rise, Maswik North provided us the leisurely ambience of a peaceful vacation.

The lodge staff was a mixed bag - helpful in providing all the information but not right away. The directions to our room that one of the staff gave were very confusing even to the next person I had to clarify with. She had to re-draw the directions to guide us. The cleaning staff seemed enthusiastic to clean the room as they kept knocking on the door to change towels. Much to our surprise, they finally left two towels for four people and didn’t bother refilling the coffee etc.

As far as food is concerned, there are quite a few options in the area. The El Tovar, though pricey, is worth it. The Arizona Room at the Bright Angel Lodge is close by. Among other cuisines available, the pizza counter located in the food court of the Maswik Lodge is one of the best. A five topping pizza made from scratch under $20 is a good deal considering what we got while travelling through 3 National Parks this Thanksgiving season.

Overall, the location was convenient, the rooms were comfortable and far from the big crowds. Considering the price, the place scores a 3 out of five.

My husband and I stayed in an upstairs room - Mesquite. There are good and bad things about this motel.
Check in takes quite a while and rooms are a good walk away, but if you have a car you can park out the front of your room. There are lots of deer and squirrels walking around the whole area which is lovely.
Our room was very basic but clean, with 2 double beds and a very small bathroom, plenty of clean towels. The decor was very tired, TV ancient and AC very noisy.
Maswick Lodge is a 5 min walk to the rim great for sunrise and sunset.
The shuttle bus, shop and cafeteria also a 5 min walk away.
El Tolvar is a 20 min walk or you can catch a taxi, just book through reception. El Tolvar is a great place for dinner book at least 6 weeks in advance and ask for a window view.
The cafeteria food is terrible only good thing about it is free Wi Fi.
Bright Angel lodge is also another good place to go for dinner after watching the sunset.
Maswick lodge is a basic motel in a fantastic area, with the wonders of the Grand Canyon so close we spent very little time in our room so it is a good base for your daily outings.

Because of the much cheaper room rate, as compared to El Tovar or the Bright Angel Lodge, I expected very little from the Maswik Lodge. Many have posted that there is no Air Conditioning. This is true; however, we stayed over the Thanksgiving holiday, and found no need for it. The heat however, works just fine. Use it sparingly. ;) We stayed on the second floor, and you could literally hear every footstep from the other guests walking on the balcony because the primary structure of the building is wood versus steel and/or concrete. However, what we did hear was NOT excessive or disrupting to our sleep whatsoever, and it never went on past 9pm. Overall, the lodging portion served it's purpose, we slept well, and were warm with a hot shower each day.
The food is a different story. If you stay at the Maswik lodge, DO NOT waste your money eating at the "cafeteria." It's really nothing more than a glorified Luby's or Picadilly Cafeteria and the prices are really high. (Yes we expected high prices considering the location, but also a decent product to go with it.) The food was mediocre at best, and it cost us $40 for 2 adults and 1 child to eat. That was our first night there. We later discovered the Bright Angel lodge has 2 restaurants, The Bright Angel Restaurant, and the Angel Room. The restaurant is like a diner, with GREAT food, and a healthy variety. I personally recommend the Huevos Rancheros (best I've ever had). We ate there a few times, and never spent more than $35 for the three of us. We ate at the angel room once, and it's "fancier" than the restaurant side of Bright Angel, but the food is “just okay.” Slightly over priced, but I didn't leave feeling like I had been taken advantage of (unlike I did after eating at the Maswik). For Thanksgiving Dinner we waited 2 hours to eat at El Tovar, and it was worth every minute and every penny; very intimate, very elegant, and top notch cuisine/service. I think including tip we spent $100, but the before tip amount was about $80.
When considering your stay at the Grand Canyon, I encourage you to think about why you came. We went to stare in sheer amazement of the Grand Canyon. Staying in a 5-star resort was never in our minds, the trip was about the Grand Canyon. Save the extra money you'd spend on a room at El Tovar or Bright Angel, and use it to eat their food while you stay at the Maswik.
They're all owned and operated by the same company if memory serves.

Room Tip: Stay at the Maswik, and save money. The money saved can be used to eat at the other lodges, and for...

The room was located a fair distance from reception and with no help it was quite a task dragging our 3 suitcases along. The room itself was small compared to other hotel rooms in the US. The fixtures were old, the ventilation in the bathroom was non-existent and the bed wasn’t very comfortable. The heater was very noisy and the TV was at least 20yrs old.

Room Tip: Try to get a room close to reception

We booked this room from the visitors center and it was the last one as it was the weekend. When we got there we were told it was a handicap room. The room was quite big and had a fridge and coffee maker. The bathroom was huge and everything was exceptionally clean. The staff are great and will do anything to help you. The food at the restaurant there is good and has a wide selection you will find something for everyone. This place is great and I would recommend it to anyone. The gift shop is very nice and has a good selection of fair priced items. As an after thought I like a place that provides tea and this place gives you herbal tea as well in your room. Not everyone drinks coffee. Be fair and remember this place once belonged to most of the cleaning staff so be generous and leave a tip!

Room Tip: We were in an end room and the metal stairs beside it were noisy when people ran up and down them. V...

I think Maswik Lodge need to hire a new marketing manager (just joking).
During my trip to Grand Canyon, I have decided to stay inside the national park no matter how. I did a lot of research and monitored the reservation availability frequently but 2 weeks before my trip, the only available rooms are either at Maswik or Yavapai Lodge. Looking at the photos online, I am not impressed at all. I thought "I have to pay USD99 for such a basic and lousy motel?!" I booked it anyway since I must stay in the park for the sunrise and sunset.
It was a great surprise. The room is big and nice. Very clean, with 2 queen size beds, cable TV, and baththub. Though still a bit expensive for me, but still a pleasant surprise :)
We drove from Phoenix in early morning, stopped by at Sedona and enter Grand Canyon National Park from the East entrance. We drove along dessert view and waited for sunset at Mother's point. After the sunset, we drove to the Village for check in. (Please don't bring down your luggage during check in because most of the rooms are quite far away from the lobby.) We were very tired after moving our luggages in and out of the car so we decided to have dinner at the Maswik Lodge cafe before return to our room. We can park our car right in front of our room.
The food was just so so, but with reasonable variety. You can get free wifi in the cafe too.
The location is very good. Bus stops are within walking distance.
