“Newly renovated room”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 5, 2011

We stayed at the Maswik Lodge as that was the accommodations used by the Grand Canyon Railway for overnight stays at the South Rim. We asked for a room near the front as I am still healing from a broken ankle. The room was in a two store motel building with maybe ten rooms; directly across the street from the Maswik main building where the check-in is located along with the gift shop, tour desk and food court. The gal at check-in told us it was a renovated room. It had two queen beds, small round table with two chairs, a night stand between the two beds, the credenza with three drawers and of course the area where the TV sits inside. There was a patio outside the sliding glass doors where sat two plastic chairs. The vanity/sink was separate from the toilet and tub/shower. Rather than a closet with doors, it was just open and was directly across from the vanity/sink. Under nether the vanity/sink was a small frig. Above the clothes rack in the “closet” was the in room safe. There was no microwave as those are not allowed within the park. Rooms work with key cards. Of course the Maswik Lodge is one of the free shuttle bus stops. The room was clean, and had the standard amenities of soap, shampoo, conditioner and lotion; plenty of towels and very comfortable.

We stayed in one of the cabins which was quite basic but clean and fine for our needs. It didn't have air conditioning but that isn't a problem at night because the temperature drops making for a good nights sleep. The best bit about these cabins really is there proximity to the Grand Canyon which really is 5 minutes walk away to the nearest view point and Bright Angel trail is only another minute or so on from there.

If this motel was anywhere else, it would be vastly overpriced. However, the convenience of being in the Grand Canyon park and not have to worry about parking make it worth the money. If booking far in advance of your travel date, I'd suggest trying to get into El Tovar which is much, much nicer for only a few dollars more. Unlike the Bright Angel, the Maswik isn't right beside the rim but it's only a 5-minute walk away from the rim and the Bright Angel trailhead and there are shuttles every few minutes to restaurants, trailheads, etc. We were in one of the many Maswik buildings, a short walk from the Maswik Lodge itself. (If you stay at any of the hotels in the park, bear in mind that they consist of several buildings and a photo of the particular hotel/lodge may not be an accurate indication of what your room will be like.) Our room (2 queens) was very clean and a good size but even though it looked as if it had been updated (new tile) the beige and brown decor made it drab. The bathroom was nice with a good shower. The sink area was far too small. Some of the ground floor units have patios (sort of--two chairs outside)) but ours didn't. A pity--they should put a few chairs outside as a general seating area. Some reviews describe the Maswik as being "in the trees" and there are trees but there's no view. The main Maswik lodge, which offers the widest food choice and best value for families, is only a few minutes walk even from the furthest Maswik building but be sure to bring flashlights. We would stay here again. Everything considered, it was well worth the price.

We stayed in the Maswik Lodge in August 2011 in a north room. The room was spacious, and had a nice bathroom. The shower head was great too. The room had air conditioning that worked well. The walk to the rim and the bright angel trailhead was less than 5 minutes. The hermit road bus stop was very close as well. The was a ton of parking, since most of the guests seemed to be part of a rail package. the lodge itself had a nice cafeteria, with moderate prices. There were good options for all 3 meals. There was also a sports pub with pizza, beer and big screen tvs. You could probably bring food from the cafeteria into the pub (as long as somebody in your group was getting food from the pub). I would absolutely stay here again.

Room Tip: Book early - a year in advance.

We are a family of four (2 adults, 2 teens). Our room was on a second floor on a North Maswik property. Room was spacious enough for four people. We had a/c (not necessary even in August), a ceiling fan (a plus), a small frig, and a tv (that was rarely turned on considering all there was to do in the park). The frig and a/c were the main reasons we splurged on the North room at $173 a night. That small frig held a gallon of milk, salad mix, fruit, bottled drinks, lunch meats, and various cheeses. We rarely ate out, as we purchased most of what we needed in the way of groceries for our 4 night/5 day stay at the General Market in the park. Highly recommend taking that route for a family. Prices are reasonable considering where it's located, and it was certainly help keep us within our budget. The blue shuttle will take you right to The Market Place.

Once we arrived we parked our van and didn't move it until the day we left. The shuttle stop for the Blue line is very close, but if you're going to the rim it's a short, pleasant walk from every Maskiw room. We made it to the rim by Bright Angel trailhead each morning from our room in the Redbud building in 5 - 8 minutes.

Do yourself a favor and take the red line shuttle EARLY if you plan to see the West side of the canyon. Red line shuttles fill up toward the afternoon and you may end up wasting valuable time waiting in lines to get a spot on one. The Hopi Point lookout is one of thee places to be at sunset and the Red line is the only way, short of a killer hike, to get there.

One last word of advise I wish I'd had, if you're getting a North room for the higher price, ask for a balcony room or a room with a sliding back door. Saw those after our arrival and wish, wish, wish I'd asked for one. They look awesome! Chairs are set outside the back sliding glass doors for these rooms.

Room Tip: If you're getting a North room for the higher price, ask for a balcony room or a room with a sli...

I was very impressed with this place. The beds are comfortable and the rooms are very roomy. The area surrounding our room reminded me of camp, but the room itself was not like camp at all! It was recently updated, very clean and crisp. I was also pleased with the location, a quick walk and we were at the rim. We could easily pick up the blue line for the shuttle bus and the connection for the red line was also very close.
I am weird like this, but I loved the soap/shampoo/lotion that they had in the bathrooms! Smelled wonderful.
I appreciated the conservation efforts that the lodge is putting forth.
Whenever we go back to the Grand Canyon we will stay here again.

Stayed in a cabin with 2 adults and 2 children - room was fine for our needs. Location brilliant 2 mins walk from rim. Might be a bit small if we were on a longer stay. But great to stay in the park so you can see the Grand Canyon at different times of the day.
