El Tovar Hotel
Reviewed June 17, 2014

We arrived here on our drive to Santa Fe and called at the last minute - yes they had a suite. Upon arrival we found that the Presidential Suite had just opened up and we grabbed it. It was just sunset and we stood on our terrace overlooking the most magnificent view. We ordered dinner in our room and gazed at the pictures of Theodore Roosevelt who created our National Park System and other memorabilia that fills the room. This was the first time it really dawned on me that these really are our Parks. We citizens each own a little piece of this timeless beauty. We were up at dawn with coffee from the coffee bar in our room, wrapped in blankets and watched the sunrise, changing the colors on the wall of the Canyon with every minute that passed. I have stayed in fancier hotels with upscale amenities but nothing compares to this experience. Go!

Room Tip: Presidential Suite has an enormous terrace overlooking the Grand Canyon. Suite itself is smaller tha...

This hotel is the only hotel that sits on the rim of the Grand Canyon. You can literally go to the bar grab a drink and sit of the deck watching the sun set over the canyon. The rooms are cozy and have a tv and fridge. The restaurant does good food. All and all it's outstanding and I would say the best accommodation there.

An amazing place to stay, no doubt!! We were traveling the southern part of Arizona (ie; Tombstone, Kartchner Caverns, etc.) when we decided to head north to check out the "Awe Inspiring Grand Canyon".
We arrived at the El Tovar Hotel and immediately were taken by it's spectacular location on the southern rim of the Grand Canyon. It's incredible rustic, yet elegant charm takes one back to a time of days gone by. The wrap-around porch is appointed with great rocking chairs for that early morning coffee or tea that one can share with the rising sun or perhaps with an amazing adult beverage (provided by the incredible staff of the El Tovar Veranda Lounge) whilst viewing an unforgettable sunset, not mention the visiting elk that appear both at dawn & dusk...just remember they are wild, so respect their beauty from a distance.
Are you excited yet?? Okay, so we kinda figured that we had no chance of staying at this gem of a hotel, as you probably have heard, you need reservations way in advance. So just for fun we walked up to the front desk and asked if there were any available rooms. Well much to our surprise someone had just cancelled!! Feeling luckier than ever, we laid down a credit card and were escorted to our beautiful suite!!
The hotel, the staff, the service, the suites, the whole enchilada was more amazing than words can express.
Book your reservations in advance. I promise you, you will not be disappointed...it's a frontseat to the Grand Canyon..spoil yourself, we did and it was totally worth it!!

We went to Grand canyon last year and we did´t get a reservation! So this year we made a reservation with a year in advance. We reserved a deluxe room and it was great. The room, was new ( the did a remodeling this year), with a fantastic view of the canyon, very comfortable and cozy. It was so nice to stayed at El Tovar, we love the lounge and the restaurant have amazing food and service, like last year. We had a Great dinner and it was so nice to be in the Hotel and not to have to walked to another lodge after a few drinks!
Just what I expected!!

We had reservations at Maswik Lodge for two nights, which I had made many months ago as no rooms were left on the rim. Repeated attempts failed to find a room on the rim, but on our way in to Grand Canyon Village we stopped to check out the restaurant at El Tovar. My husband decided to ask about room availability and they had one but we would have to change rooms from one night to the next. We decided to do it and I'm glad we did. Both rooms were nice, although the second was much smaller. We did arrive to the smaller room to find a goody bag and a note informing us we were chosen as customer of the day. It worked. We laughed about the snacks, the insulated Grand Canyon coffee mug and the little rubber duck that were included.

If you really want to experience the Grand Canyon in all its glory you really have to stay here, it has the perfect position. But here is the problem, there is little if any competition.
First the positives. The position is stunning, the rim is just feet away. The restaurant is exceptionally good. The food is high quality and the servers really know their job. Its worth booking as it gets very busy.
On the down side. There is no visitor parking. The general public arrive in numbers and use up all the spaces. They also have free access to the hotel which means that during the day it is very busy. The one bar is far too small and full of visitors munching burgers. Our first room spelt so strongly of bleach we could not stay in it. However the staff reacted quickly and found us another one. The room we had was dreary, small and uninspiring. The whole place needs an upgrade. Its resting on its laurels. It could be wonderful . At present it represents poor value for money, but of course you don't mind because the Grand Canyon is so utterly amazing!

Room Tip: A room overlooking the rim, if you can afford it

We spent one here and it was great. We had a King room at the terrace level and it was sort of like being in a maze to get to it, but hey, that's part of the charm in these old historic hotels. Our room was very nice and well appointed. The service was great—I could not get the air conditioner to cool the room to our satisfaction and mentioned it at the front desk. By the time we had dinner, watched the sunset and had a nightcap our room was cooled down. They took care of it promptly. We had a great dinner in the hotel dining room. Our Filet Mignons were cooked perfectly and we really enjoyed them. This is a somewhat rustic hotel, more of a lodge and built with a large front veranda and porch on the back where the view is awesome! I love this style of place; it takes one back to a time long ago when travel was more of an adventure. We highly recommend this hotel.
