“Good location”
Reviewed June 10, 2014

This is the oldest and most prestigious hotel in the South Rim park. The location is great, right on the Rim Trail. It has an old world hunting lodge feel with a high end restaurant and bar. Our room was rather small with little space for luggage and belongings. The Wi-Fi was weak and slow. However, the bathroom was above average and the traditional fixtures and old school atmosphere is a nice change from modern chain hotels.

Room Tip: Book 8 or more months in advance. Grand Canyon lodges are very popular.

Keep in mind this hotel dates back to 1905 and while there have been many renovations, it still retains the original old bones and rustic ambiance of a great national park lodge. We spent the night after driving up from Sedona on 5/22--had a nice lunch upon arrival. I had booked Yavapaii months before but kept calling Xanterra and finally got lucky the week before our trip. The lodge is just steps away from the rim and the Trail of Time. We walked to Yavapaii point (I believe it was called) for sunset and then back to El Tovar for a delicious dinner (I had made reservations weeks in advance). The manager's suite had a sitting area, fridge, microwave and coffee maker. The bedroom had 2 queens and a small bathroom. We enjoyed a good breakfast before hitting the road down to Scottsdale. I would definitely do 2 days there if I could do it again, but would choose a cheaper room or stay at Bright Angel. Lovely visit but too short.

We elected to upgrade to the Presidential Suite (3rd floor) at check-in, the balcony overlooks the rim of the canyon which is just beautiful. The suite was nice and the view was well worth the money however considering the price of the suite, we thought we would've received a little better service with luggage, etc. The room was musty so we had to open the windows to air it out. The suite has 2 queen beds and a small sitting room. The hotel is rustic so be prepared for stairs. The Presidential Suite is all about the view.

The parking is first come, first served so be prepared to walk. The day-trippers tend to leave around dusk so you may be able to get a better space after dark. Hotel parking is very limited.

Where else can you stay in a historic old hotel just steps from the rim of the most spectacular site in the world? We had a deluxe room with canyon view. The canyon rim was literally just out the back door of the hotel which was right next to our room. This is a public entrance so it can get a little noisy especially early in the morning. As others have said, the place is rustic, the lobby is charming, the staff friendly and the rooms are small, but who cares? Look where you are! As for the El Tovar restaurant, they must have been having an off night when we dined there. The service was good but the food less than average and once the sun goes down, what little view there was is gone. Hopefully you will have better luck.

To stay at least one night at El Tovar for the charm of a bygone era is worthwhile, especially in the small lodge lobby and dining room. We stayed in a deluxe room that accommodated our two children: very comfortable beds, but otherwise the rooms per se were nothing special. One can relax on the veranda in the rocking chairs, and of course stroll out to the rim trail 40 feet away to look into the canyon. With children, we opted to eat at the excellent and much less expensive Bright Angel Lodge; but for a couple the menu and setting at El Tovar is clearly fine dining.

Room Tip: It doesn't really matter whether you have a view from the room, as the view outside on the rim t...

We have been to the Grand Canyon numerous times but never stayed in the Grand Canyon Village until this trip! I made reservations far enough in advance to be able to stay at the El Tovar and I am so glad we did! The El Tovar is an oldie but a goodie and I would not hesitate to stay there again! The room we had was very nice and it included a private bathroom which I understand some rooms have a shared bathroom. I loved getting up in the morning, grabbing a cup of coffee (free in the lobby) and walking along the rim of this absolutely spectacular and breathtaking place on earth! The hotel is old but has a lot of charm and we will definitely be back! I am sure the rooms with a view of the canyon are wonderful but even if you don't have that - just being right down by the edge and walking the path along the rim makes up for that! We will definitely do this again!!

This is a lovely hotel with great rustic approach that automatically makes you feel associated with the outdoors while being in a hotel. Be prepared for a small room but we felt this was the only negative while the positives greatly outweighed. We would go back again regardless.

Beautiful view of canyon. Wonderful staff. Very close to a few trails.
