“Great lodge experience”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 3, 2014

As with a lot of the great lodges of the national parks, the El Tovar is one of the great lodge experience when visiting the Grand Canyon. You have to keep in mind that these hotels/lodges were built several decades ago and although have some modern day conveniences, there are certain amenities you will not find. This is a part of the great lodge experience - old stairs squeak and rooms are smaller. This room had a partial view of the canyon but mostly looked toward the other lodges. The location is excellent being right on the rim of the South Village. Service was very good and the staff very friendly. Take time to visit the restaurant downstairs - food is great.

If you would like to experience a great lodge in one of our great parks - El Tovar is the choice

Lots of history with breath taking views of the Grand Canyon. Very busy during the Christmas season and the people are very nice. Must had means to enjoy such history, coupled with a great atmosphere second to none. Money follows money!!!!

Room Tip: The rooms are all good, its a very romantic place and the Elks, Moose, Dears, that are mounted in th...

This is an iconic old lodge sited on the edge of the Grand Canyon. It has a lovely rustic foyer and porches.
The rooms are small and clunky with unattractive beige linen and towels. The bathrooms are tiny.
The main problem with this hotel is the poor sleep quality. Our rooms were on the ground floor and the corridor outside our room was a thoroughfare to outside. The noise levels were very high from the floor above, the corridor and the extremely loud room heaters which turned on and off all night. Possibly the upper floors might have been better.
I would still return but would request quieter rooms. It is worth putting up with the average accommodation for the location.

Charming lodge in perfect inside the park, on the Rim location. Cozy fireplace in lobby, friendly staff. The rooms are VERY small, no surprise since the lodge is very old, but they were clean. Besides, tits the Grand Canyon, you should be outside! We ate dinner in the restaurant, reservation was honored, table was waiting. The food was fine, though nothing special, and while not inexpensive, it was fairly priced. Service was outstanding, first class. Thank you to Michael, our server that evening. Recommended.

Room Tip: Some of the rooms (like ours) were below grade; we actually walked down to the room. Try for mezzan...

To wake up on the rim of the Grand Canyon is worth the extra dollar. At sunrise walk to a cup of coffee and back out on the patio to look into the sunrise beaming into the Grand Canyon. WOW what a wake up call. The restaurant is good, the rooms are good, the bar is good, but the view is GREAT. Don't miss this one if you can splurge and stay here.

We stayed there in early December, and the lodge was decorated beautifully for the holidays. The weather was cold at the rim - 20 deg F, but the upsides were that there were not a lot of tourists, and the lodge seemed all that much more cozy. Opened in 1905, it harks back to that time in a wonderful way. The lodge is beautiful, the staff competent and friendly, and accomodating. We arrived early, and our room wasn't ready. They said they'd call us when it was, and surprisingly - they were quite busy - they called us within an hour, well before the published check in time. We booked a deluxe king, which was nicer than the photo on their site. Our room had a balcony (shared with one other room), one of not many in the lodge. Cold when we were there, but the balcony had a nice view of the canyon, and was nice for coffee in the morning (coffee is free in the lobby, and our room had a small pot). The restaurant was very good (who would have thought in a park?), if not cheap. The only bad thing was the bathroom. It took forever to get hot water, the shower leaked no matter what you did to prevent it, and there was very little space to put toiletries. These were small problems; the overall experience was excellent, and, importantly, unique. We highly recommend it.

Room Tip: See above. Our deluxe king had a shared balcony with a view of the canyon. A very nice room.

Walk out your door and there it is, more than you van take in without walking around most of the day. The hotel is old dark and woodsy, just like it should be. The rooms are outdated,( but they should be!) They are also very large, as are the bathroom in old black and white tile with excellent timed extra heaters if you are there in winter as we were. The dining room has two parts, one with views of the Canyon , one with two fireplaces. We stayed two days and the breakfast is superb for a great price, ditto for the lunches. The dinners were good, but strangely not as exceptional as the earlier meals, and still great prices with nice wines. The staff is very accommodating, letting us borrow wines glasses and champagne glasses for our own wines for champagne on the terrace and game time on the second floor game area. The only let down was that there was no BIG fireplace in the lobby as you would expect of an old lodge, just a regular one in off to the side. Still, a unique experience. I have been to the Grand Canyon 4-5 times, but staying there and spending the time hiking around all day is a totally different experience.

Room Tip: book a year in advance or last minute for possible cancellations. They will be renovating some room...
