El Tovar Hotel
Reviewed August 26, 2013

We stayed three nights in the El Tovar suite @ the El Tovar hotel this past August. I have never seen a hotel balcony that is larger than this in any hotel. It is more of a deck, and the view of the canyon is amazing, right in your face amazing!!! The rest of the suite the interior rooms are just basic. The bedroom is small really small compared to other bedrooms I saw in the regular two queen rooms. The suite also has a small sitting room and a small bathroom. They had great bath products in the bathroom. We had dinner in the El Tovar dining room two nights and it was excellent both the service and quality of the food. Also ate breakfast in the dining room once but would skip that. Although it was good I found the price high. $4.99 for a glass of juice. Overall I would definitely return to the El Tovar but next time get a regular room since I did the suite, After the first time the wow factor would be less. Also I had a problem with the a/c going off (compressor) every night. This would cause the room to heat up and sleep would be difficult. I mentioned it at check out and they took $150.00 off of my bill. I felt this was an acceptable solution and mentioned that the hotel will be closed for three months this winter for renovations and heating and air conditioned would be upgraded.

Room Tip: If you can afford it get the El Tovar suite, the best room in the hotel.

So much to say about this. We had one of the few rooms with a full veranda and the vantage point over the rim is stupendous, including finding elk grazing right underneath me when awakened at 4am. It makes all the sightseeing, hiking, etc easy due to the access and the property itself is historic, rustic & charming. On site restaurant quite good. Would absolutely want to stay there again on a return trip to the Canyon. Room was spacious (though bath was a little antiquated--but expected) and decor fits the period. Very glad we got to have this experience

Room Tip: Book well in advance to get one of the rooms with spacious deck

No doubt, this is the location you want to be when staying in the canyon park. Some 50 yards from the actual rim, you just can't get any closer. That means you can spend all your time out sightseeing and hiking, which is a good thing since you'll not want to be spending your time in the room (almost none of which have views, either).

Pros: Location, location, location. You could walk right out on the rim walk and start your day right away. And then you can do the same at night. The alternative is one of the other hotels along the rim, one of which looked more like a dorm/motel. You certainly don't want to stay outside the park given that it will just take a chunk of your sightseeing time each day getting in and out of the park and to parking. The hotel itself has a certain rustic charm to it for those who like that sort of thing. Think camping lodge. There were rockers out on both porches, which were enjoyable at the end of the day (if you could find an open one), and early in the morning with a mug of coffee. There was a herd of elk that munched on the lawn outside the restaurant every evening, keeping the kids (and not a few adults) distracted for a while.

Cons: Well, the rooms are nothing you want to spend time in (tho the beds were comfortable enough). Almost none of them has a view. In fact, many are below ground level. Rooms are down stairs, no elevators, meaning you will be carrying heavy luggage on stairs (so pack lightly). The AC is sensored to go off when you are out of the room, meaning it's quite warm (in the summer) when you return, taking a while to cool down. There was no grab-and-go breakfast spot; you had to walk down the rim a couple hundred yards to the other lodge to find that (at least the coffee was good). And finally, the kicker - the ice cream store down the walkway closes by 8 pm in the summer, too early for all the people clearly walking up and trying the door.

At the end of the day, this was a good place to stay as a first-timer. I probably would not do so the second time around.

Room Tip: Try to get a room above ground, preferably second floor. There are few good views, but at least som...

We decided to stay here, as it was our wedding anniversary and really glad we did. It is an old hotel and you are paying for a piece of American history and the location, but it's worth it. Our room wasn't too small (although the bathroom was) and our family of five fitted well. When we checked in, they immediately arranged for a roll-away to be put in the room and check-in was very friendly and efficient. We didn't expect a rim view and whilst we didn't have a direct view, we could see the canyon, as well as elk on the lawn from the window. We arrived at the car park at 2pm and did a ranger program and walked part of the rim trail before check-in. We did notice that by 4pm, people were having problems finding a parking spot, so I guess I'd advise getting there early or waiting until some of the day-trippers have left. It was amazing to be able to watch sunset from just outside the hotel and see the elk grazing on the grass outside. We got up early for sunrise too, and it was lovely to have the canyon almost to ourselves. Really glad we stayed here, rather than at one of the hotels set back a bit from the rim.

Wow,what a location,Grand Canyon South Rim 50 yards from front lobby. Perfect location to visit all the vista points, especially with the shuttle buses on hand.
The restaurant was great, brilliant choice, but it is best to make a reservation,as it is very busy in the evening.
This is one of my top ten hotels,I have stayed in.

Room Tip: Must make a dinner table reservation.

The El Tovar is a beautiful old hotel. We really appreciated the history and the location. We had dinner in the dining room there and loved it. Amazing to walk out the back door and have the canyon view right there.

With that being said...the rooms themselves are small, musty, and the air conditioning did not work. It turns out that when you checked in, they gave you a slip of paper that said not to set the AC below 73 or it would short out. We didn't notice it. The room was hot when we arrived, so we put it down to 68. It was like a sauna in there all night. None of us slept at all, and we couldn't wait to check out. Also, we paid for a deluxe queen ($300+) and had a view of the parking lot which was disappointing.

Room Tip: Don't set the AC too low!!!!

Check-In: We guess, that there is absolutely no earlier check in than 4 pm. The Hotel is not really managed as a regular Hotel.
Room: Small and it doesn't smell too good. It is nice to be so Close to the Rim.
Bathroom: Very old fashioned (kept the way it used to be, but renovated) - no shelves to put your bag anywhere... not very convenient.
Restaruant: Worst Food ever. See Review there.
