My husband and I visited the Grand Canyon in early May. We stayed at the El Tovar Hotel. If you are looking to stay right on the rim this is the place for you! If you plan on doing a long day hike or will be out wandering around all day this is a great place to stay. We hiked 12 miles and once we completed our hike we were able to walk along the rim right back to the hotel and didn't have to move the car once while we were there. The inside of the hotel is very comfortable with a historic feel. The room was very clean, comfortable bed and good size bathroom. I would give the cleanliness of the room an outstanding. We ordered room service the night after our hike, the service was excellent but the food was mediocre, we were not that impressed. The following morning we had breakfast in the dining room. I read tons of reviews that the food was outstanding but again the food was nothing but ordinary, not something to rave about. All in all we absolutely enjoyed our stay here and would stay here again and recommend to a friend.

Loved El Tovar! Yes, our room was small & rather expensive, but that was completely outweighed by being so close to the Grand Canyon. What a view!
We loved being able to get up for sunrise & be at the rim in under 2 minutes, & to come across a huge male elk calmly grazing on the lawn in front of the hotel! Coffee available on the mezzanine balcony each morning was much appreciated on return from our early morning walks. Watching the condors gliding on the thermals above the Canyon walls near to the hotel was another highlight.
We would definitely stay here again if we return to the Grand Canyon (which we hopefully will one day, although it did take 25 years for us to make this return visit!!).

We got caught in a bit a rain shower and were lucky enough to get a great spot in the lounge. The drinks are great! There is good indoor and outdoor seating. If the weather is cold there is not a lot of indoor seating get there early if you want to set inside.

Room Tip: This is a great rest stop hiking the rim through the lodge area. We just had drinks but they had a nice appetizer bar menu too.

The El Tovar was fantastic all around. The historic building, rooms, and proximity to the rim were fantastic. It's in amazing shape for being built in 1905. I would definitely stay there again. None of the rooms have a view of the grand canyon, but it's literally 20-40 feet to the rim. You can sit on the porch, at the lounge, and/or walk to everything from here.

Room Tip: Pull up in your car to front of the hotel. You can leave your car there for a while so you can check in and unload. Parking there is a real bear! If you can, show up at the hotel before 10 am or after 6 pm. All the "day visitors" to the grand canyon won't be there then and it's SO much more enjoyable and easier!

We stayed in the Colter view-suite which was beautiful (alittle cramped in the hallway and refrig area - but not restricting). The suite was comfortable and nicely decorated. It is very nostalgic. The bathroom was gorgeous!!! Off of the sitting area was a deck which faced the south rim. It is true that it is private in that noone else can get on your deck - but there is no privacy at all on the deck itself. The balcony from the floor above overlooks the deck as well as the suite next door has an adjacent deck with no divider (thankfully there was noone from that room out on their deck while we were there). Everyone walking by the sidewalk along the south rim can also see you. None-the-less to wake up and come out onto the deck to see the sunrise over the canyon or to sit out and watch the sun set while eating apps and having drinks - was an amazing experience. We also watched the elk that had walked up on to the grounds --- from a safe distance. The El Tovar itself is a beautiful historic facility and the location is wonderful. It is fun to just walk around and see the art work and imagine days gone by. You never have to move your car (free parking too)!! We did not eat in the restaurant so I can not critique the food but our south rim experience was really enhanced by staying at the El Tovar. It was quite costly - but worth it.

Room Tip: The view suites or rooms facing the Angel Lodge are worth the extra money to see the canyon from your room.
