I thought we would get to Phantom too early for the canteen to re-open after breakfast. We had left the South Kaibab trailhead about 4:45 a.m. but were a little slower than planned. We arrived at Phantom about 7:45 a.m. and filled out camelbacks, had a snack, changed socks, used the potty, and then the canteen opened. Max and I split a Lemmie... so cold and so good. Gave me just the energy to take off on the North Kaibab trail - only 18 miles to go to the North rim!!

The food, if you can get reservations, is really good. If you hike in the food is incredible. Never stayed in the cabins, have always hiked in and camped at Bright Angel Campground. The Canteen carries snacks, lemonade, tea etc. Nice cool area to relax and spend the day.

We have the "privilege" of riding the Mules down to Phantom Ranch and spending the night. It is primitive. The food was good and plentiful. Enjoyed the evening Ranger talks.

Even after running for over 30 miles the lunch was pretty bad. Not sure why they don't spend more time making this nicer, but I could have saved some money by not ordering it.

After a long dusty hike, with tourists and mules, this oasis is a pleasant surprise. Nice place to camp, and you can get a burger and a shake! You can't top that.
