I think this place rests on its laurels as it is the ONLY place you can stay/ eat at the North Rim. Let's face it, the accommodation is like hunkering down in a Little Tikes play house. That I can live with. But the food at the restaurant is ATROCIOUS. Even the view doesn't make up for the muck they serve at a premium price. I ended up with a mushroom and a plate of brown rice with a dollop of something red. It sounded all very high-falluting and scrummy on the menu. The starter of hummous made from black-eyed peas was no better either.

Room Tip: Visit the Grand Canyon in a day and stay somewhere a distance away for walking.

One of America's vacation treasures is the spectacular and uncrowded North Rim of the Grand Canyon. As there is only one facility (except for a couple of campgrounds) for 80 miles around (and more than 200 miles by road from the more popular South Rim), the North Rim Lodge is an essential destination.
On our previous visit there 11 years ago, we stayed in a Western Cabin, which is rustic and pretty basic, but ample space, clean and quiet. The lovely dining room in the 85-year old Lodge provided very good meals in an unhurried setting.
Sadly, our return last month produced some unhappy surprises. A number of additional, smaller, cabins have been added - that's fine, but also two "motel" complexes have been thrown up. Because we only booked in February, there was no late September accommodation available except in one of the new motel rooms. It was small, dark, limited to only one chair (understandable as there was not space for two), poorly lighted and, most unhappily, without any soundproofing. People often like to get an early start into the Canyon, so 4:30 a.m. noise (including boot marches) from adjacent units seems to be the norm.
All the added rooms have placed an enormous burden on the unexpanded Dining Room. Fortunately, we had made our dinner reservations in February when we booked the room. Those who did not found that their choice of seating was either 4:30 or 8:30!
While the meals were satisfactory - nothing special and far too large portions - the service was not. The waiters must be under orders to turn the tables as quickly as possible, and we did not appreciate having the entrees served before we were half-way through our starter courses.
The Lodge is still a wonderful place to visit. But now we tell our friends, (1) book even earlier (maybe a year in advance) because now large tour groups (there were three large busloads each night) seem to get preferred accommodation, (2) make dinner reservations when booking the room, and (3) do not under any circumstances take a "motel" room.

I loved these rustic cabins that are part of the N Rim experience. They are cute and adequate. As far as amenities go, there is a coffee maker and a hair dryer. There is also lotion, shampoo, conditioner and shower gel in the bath. The bed was quite comfortable; the linens were newer. We liked the idea of the coffee shop by day/saloon by night. Good use of space. We dined one night in the main dining room in the lodge. The grilled vegetable platter was our favorite entree. There is a heavy concentration of garlic in the bread and in the marinara sauce. There will not be vampires inhabiting the north rim. We also had pizza in the deli in the pines and it was average, but edible. I would give the views and ambience of the lodge dining above average! The entire stay, hiking included, was memorable.

No luxury - but a cabin in a national park within steps of gorgeous views. Love the fireplace. Clean rooms. Have a refrigerator. Western cabins are less rustic than the others, but all are adequate for a good night's rest before a long hike.

Contrary to the description on the website, there is a coffee maker in the Frontier Cabin rooms. This was an item of concern as we planned to get up for sunrise to walk out to Bright Angel Point - something we highly recommend. To make matters even better, the bar in the lodge opens as a coffer shop at 5:30 am. Fear not, coffee is available.

The cabins are tiny. We slept in separate beds, the twin bed was just too small. The lodge was fun - sit around the campfire at night - enjoy the back deck and restaurant at sunset. We enjoyed our one night stay.

It is annoying that you cannot get your car parked near the cabins to carry your bags in. The porter service was extremely slow getting the golf cart to ferry our bags to our cabin (we waited 20+ minutes) so we wound up packing overnight bags and carrying them from the trunk of our car to the cabin - and of course forgot things and had to walk back to the car to get them.

The cabin room we had was a little walk away from the main lodge, but the paths were well laid out, so it was easy to get to and from the main lodge. The room was a good size and clean. There was no a/c unit but there was an overhead fan. The shower room was small but had an exceptionally powerful shower. For the price these cabins offer a comfortable stay at the north rim.
