This campground was perfect. It's a 30 minute drive to the main entrance of the canyon park, but don't let that deter you. There is a bathroom and a sink to do your dishes, but for showers and wifi you'll have to go to the main campground. There is also no lighting, which is a good thing for stargazing. Just don't forget to pack a flashlight. Most of the tentsites have a bit of tree cover where you can put your tent under if you'd like to sleep in a bit, but I still recommend that you get up to see the sunrise.
As for timing, we got there around 1pm in the second week of september and we had plenty of room.

Room Tip: Around campground 45 or 46(I think) there is a small pathway that leads to a great view of the deser...

Just what we wanted--a quiet low-key night together before an early morning hike. We got there at about noon on a Friday and it filled up pretty soon thereafter. It had everything we needed--bathrooms, fire ring, table, general store around the corner. Easy to check in and set up. All sites are great. If you want something busier then Mather is a better choice--much more touristy. From desert view, it's an easy (and beautiful) 20 minute drive to the main village. Also showers (and laundry) at camper services near Mather for $2/8 minute. Huge grocery there as well. Loved Desert View and would certainly go back.

We got a great spot upon arrival at 11am. I know it filled up within a couple of hours afterwards & for great reason. It was a perfect spot for our Canyon visit & we were happy with our choice to stay here rather than Mather. We loved the seclusion from the busy-ness of the park.
Keep in mind if you are considering staying here that it is a drive from the south rim bus, park & activities. The best sunsets are quite far away, with a significant bus trip & drive back after sunset.
We would stay here again & recommend it, but look forward to trying Mather out at some point too just for the convenience of everything.
The bathrooms were clean, spots flat & with plenty of space from your neighbors, and with a store around to pick up firewood & snacks.
Good choice for us, but not for everyone.

My friend and I took a risk and came to the Grand Canyon on a weekend in early June and somehow managed to avoid a bulk of the crowds. Mather Campground was crazy busy, and I'm so glad we didn't even try and camp there and went straight for Desert View.

The campsites in NE corner were, in our opinion, the best. We stayed in 29, but the ones adjacent on either side of us were great because they opened to a vast sprawling landscape, which we later discovered could take us straight to Desert Rim.

Neverstopexploring2's recommendation was spot on. I don't know if we hiked the exact route described, but we did indeed find a great spot in the general area and watched a great sunset.

12 bucks a night is a great deal for these great campsites. They had running water in multiple locations, a clean bathroom/sink, the fire pits had grates for cooking on, and the firewood for sale lasted us nicely.

We showed up midday on a Friday and had our pick of the park, but it did fill up quickly, and Saturday it was all the way full, so I would recommend arriving early in the day and grabbing your site.

Not as crouded as the Mather campground, it's a wonderful place to stay.
Restrooms were clean, enough space for one or more tents, enough shade, picknick table, fire pit, a bit of privacy if needed, some really great viewpoints nearby, ...
However, there are no showers so you have to drive up to the mather campground.
It's everything you can expect for 12$ a night!

Be on time though!

I don't generally like car camping but this place has lots of privacy options. Many sites have their own little drive and the outside rim boarders national forest land. I think we stayed in site 41. We quickly found a walking path and followed it to one of the best views of the Canyon we found anywhere. It felt like we discovered it ourselves. One note: Someone told us they saw a mountain lion in our campsite while we were out during the day. We didn't see it but sure did think about it while we were trying to sleep! There are no showers or electricity but water, sinks, toilets and a snack bar and store are within walking distance.

This is a great place to camp, away from the hustle and bustle of the Grand Canyon Village. We came in from the east entrance at 8pm and were lucky to get a site (there were just three spaces left). We pitched the tent and walked a shirt distance to the most beautiful sunset view of the canyon. It was quiet at night and the bathrooms were clean but no showers!!
