Owner description: Word of mouth has that the more remote, harder to get to and therefore less crowded North Rim offers a more authentic Canyon experience and better views. However, there is no bus service on this rim and it is closed during the winter.

My husband and I have been to the South Rim of the Grand Canyon several times but have never been able to time a visit so that the road was open to the North Rim. It's been on our bucket list for a long time and finally this year we made our travel plans so they would allow for a stop at the North Rim.

We stayed in St. George, Utah and made the day trip to the North Rim. We were surprised that it really didn't take all that long to get there. It was about a 3 hour plus drive but didn't seem that bad. We went the week before memorial day (just after the road opened for the season) and found the roads to be virtually empty of traffic. The last 45 miles of the trek is pretty desolate so make sure you stop at the Jacob Lake Inn and stock up on drinks and snacks before heading to the park. There was a nice gift shop at the Inn. There is also a visitors center at this stop too.

Once we got into the park we headed to the Visitor's Center and the Grand Canyon Lodge first. There are restrooms here and dining if you would like to get something to eat. We drove around the park stopping at the vehicle accessible stops at Point Imperial, Vista Encantada, Roosevelt Point and the Walhalla Overlook. There are times that you can't see the canyon at all and then all of a sudden there it is in all it's glory! We took the trail at Roosevelt Point (0.2 miles roundtrip) and also the Cape Royal Trail (0.6 miles roundtrip). Both were easy trails and offered great views of the canyon. It's definitely worth getting out and taking a look.

The North Rim was far less crowded than the South Rim and we actually found that we liked the views better since you are at higher altitude on the North Rim side. It just seemed that from this higher vantage point you could get a better view of the detail in the canyon. You were also able to see the Colorado River at one point and even see the rapids.

It was just a totally different experience and one you won't regret if you get a chance to check out the North Rim.

Visiting after 26 years it's still special. We had a frontier cabin this time much smaller and no balcony which we missed. Toiletries poor quality not that this is a problem. Duplex so you can hear next door go to the lavatory etc and 2 mousetraps not inspiring. Restaurant bookings a must and the food average to poor in variety quality and presentation. Served huge lumps of bread and horrible oil as a appetite suppressant. You can't beat the place though for walks peace and nature. Definitely state owned feel.

Returned after 8 years, and so glad to be back! The views are the best, and much less crowded than the South Rim. Lucked out and got into a western cabin (306) which, according to the May 2013 issue of AZ Highways Magazine, is the best cabin on the North Rim. Have to agree, the panoramic views from the rocking chairs on the porch are unforgetable! Ate dinner our second night in the lodge and the views out the window were awesome. You have to book a reservation for dinner, and although it was hectic, the young lady seating the guests did a great job. However, the roast beef sandwich our first night (opening day, May 15th), at the Deli in the Pines, was terrible. Certainly not deli quality! Definitely enjoyed Cape Royal, a 23 mile one way drive well worth it! The views along the way and the views of Angel's Window are not to be missed. Continue a short walk on a well paved path to Cape Royal point. It will not disappoint! A path in front of our cabin leads to Angel's Point, which also offers, what else, but more stunning views! Can't wait to return!

Having been all over the Grand Canyon, I would highly recommend the less crowed side of the rim. This is seen by so few people and you can sit out on the balcony of the North Rim lodge for hours in relative piece and quite. Not the never ending crowds that you find at the South Rim. Lots to see close by and some extraordinary views.

Awesome drive from the South Rim to the North Rim or an even better drive from Southern Utah to the North Rim.

I enjoyed my first visit to the north rim. Stayed in the frontier cabins, very comfortable and clean even though we had a harmless mouse as a visitor. We also ate at the lodge was ok view was awesome food was fair, service was excellent. Make sure you stop at Jacob lake inn to get the wonderful cookies and turnovers. We did the shorter hikes enjoyed the views. We also drove to imperial point for sunset got some great pictures.
