This hike starts at the popular Trail of the Cedars which is a 1 mile loop. When you get to the Avalanche Gorge, the Avalanche Trail takes off up the mountain. The trail is relatively wide and well marked; tall trees cover most of the trail so it's nice and shaded. It's a moderate workout; and the reward is a stunning glacial lake fed by multiple waterfalls coming off the Sperry Glacier. In September, when the summer crowds are gone, it is very peaceful and serene. Great hike!

Nice hike past the creek with different rock formations than seen elsewhere. My husband tried to fish Avalanche Lake and it was, not surprisingly, over-fished. We've seen pictures of the beaches packed with people. In September it was a beautiful, peaceful, and secluded lake tucked in the mountains beneath two waterfalls.

Starts out as part of the Trail of the Cedars. The trail initially runs right beside the Avalanche Creek. It is shady all the way along, and though there are moderate climbs, it is an easy hike.

I really enjoyed the thick forest canopy and the deadfall and mossy ground that I am used to seeing in Northern forests.

It's a really nice hike and the reward is the Lake. It was a little low this year, and it was hot for September, but it didn't take away from the enjoyment.

Notes:
* Get there early or suffer driving around for an hour waiting for someone to give up a parking spot
* Bears sighted last year and this year while I was on the trail..so take bear-spray
*Some short and steeper climbs as you get near the lake
* Chipmunks rule this forest

This was one of our more relaxing hikes. Starts on trail of cedars hike, which is easy. Follows a stream of waterfalls, which show the beauty and flow of nature from mountain top. When you reach the lake, you will let out a sig of peace. Te people before us Isaiah they saw a black bear dipping his paws across the lake. So, go early for wild like views. We loved the sound of the loon, as it echoed in the mountains. Watched the loon go under, and waited for it to reappear. Spent some time on this lake relaxing before heading back. Ahh!

We hiked here in September 2013 with an infant and a toddler. It's a relatively easy hike without much elevation so my 3 year old son walked almost the entire hike by himself which was great. The view in avalanche lake is beautiful and there are nice benches there to relax or have lunch.
