Located right next to the Anhinga trail it is a delightful .4 mile contrast to the Slough boardwalk. I would suggest the Slough first as it includes the gators, and then moving to the Gumbo Limbo as it offers cover from the sun, which would be needed during the hotter months. I came just as the wet season was beginning, but I can imagine that the bugs certainly start to envelope the shaded regions as you enter the wet summer months. The contrast in topography is just a few feet, but the difference in ecosystems is stark transitioning away from the sawgrasses and willows to palms and gumbo limbos. Great way to teach kids about how minor variations can make big differences in ecology. Short hike, worth the time, especially as an add on to Anhinga.
