Reviewed September 6, 2013

We stay in the women's room in the second floor with 6 huge bunk beds. Very clean and cute.
Shared bathroom is clean.
There is a common area where you can cook but is usually busy with families/kids.
Wifi works great.
Beautiful place!

Exceptional hostel. Our group of 3 stayed in the private Two Rocks cabin and had a great experience. The cabin had a little heater, big beds, lots of outlets and a prime location near the main common building and bathrooms/showers. Everything was clean and we didn't experience waits for the showers or bathrooms. Great location - pizza place and cafe across the highway at which we passed many rainy hours. :) Service and price were great. Look forward to returning!

We stayed in the Razorback Cabin at Denali Mountain Morning Hostel last week and were so happy with the experience. The location was great, and all the staff were very friendly and helpful. We loved the full kitchen in the cabin, and that if we needed anything extra like a sharp knife or a different pan, we could go over to the shared kitchen to use what they had there. There is no bathroom in the cabin, but the bathrooms and showers are steps away so it wasn't an inconvenience at all. There is a firepit on the property right by the creek that runs through it, and the hostel staff keeps a cache of birch wood and kindling so you can start a fire when you want. Overall it was a great place to stay while we were visiting Denali and we will definitely stay there again when we return!

Hi and thanks for the awesome review! We're happy to read that you enjoyed your stay with us! We're glad you could make use of the kitchenette located in your cabin and that you still enjoyed use of our common area and shared kitchen facilities at the same time- sounds like the best of both worlds! :) We look forward to seeing you around the campfire the next time you're in Denali!

Spent 3 nights recently, cabin. overall clean, access good to restrooms. Octagon had a funny smell however, eerily quiet. futon mattress was comfortable. No mosquitos I saw, since quite cold outside. hostel shuttle to Denali wilderness access center limited, especially if you want to catch early shuttle bus to Wonderlake, and same limited service (5:30p,9:30p) back from park, so had to catch Denali Taxi shuttle for $45 a pop. overall experience rustic, good value though.not touristy like the McKinley Chalet, Princess lodgings.

Hi and thanks for taking the time to review us on TripAdvisor! We're happy to read that you enjoyed your stay overall. First off, I would like to apologize for the odor you describe in the common area. It is heated by fuel oil, and we received a few remarks about the smell. We had recently had it repaired and upon taking a closer look, we realized that there was a bolt on the heater that hadn't been tightened properly, causing it to leak oil. The issue has been repaired at this time, but again I apologize for the odor while you were there. Our shuttle service is limited, as we are 13 miles from the park entrance so we do have to operate on a set schedule to help keep our costs down, so that we can therefore keep our prices the lowest in the area. We do give plenty of advance notice about the shuttle schedule so that people can make their plans around it, and we do try to make it so that people can still catch shuttles out to Kantishna or Wonder Lake, even though they will not make the earliest ones on our shuttle schedule. We do also offer our shuttle bus for private rentals for people who would like to use it outside of our regularly scheduled times. Thanks again for your review and for the opportunity to respond. We're happy you enjoyed your stay and hope to see you the next time you visit Denali.

Our group of 10 stayed here for 2 nights. The place was beautiful and the rooms were clean. There were mosquitoes that were tough to control, but what else do you expect in the woods? We were skeptical about the shared restrooms at first but they were incredibly clean all the time. We couldn't have asked for anything more at the price we paid.... only thing we found a little weird was that we weren't allowed to hang out in the Octagon (lobby) after checking out and returning the key... according to the management, too should literally check out and leave the premise... we were a little shocked when we were asked to leave... I won't hold it against them as we were a big group and I'd think that they had to clean stuff.. but they could do a better job at clarifying what check out means upfront...

Hi and thanks for your review!

We're so happy to read that you enjoyed your stay with us and that we were able to live up to the expectations that you had for your stay and as described on our website- we try to do at least that, and ideally go above and beyond to make DMMH the best part of everyone's trip to Alaska. I have to thank my staff for keeping the common areas, restrooms, and cabins clean. They work really hard to do a great job, so thanks for your appreciation.

Regarding being asked to leave the Octagon after you checked out- I was the person doing the cleaning that day, so I am happy to elaborate on this. We do generally expect people to leave the property after they have checked out of their rooms, and I think that is a common expectation of any inn-keeper or lodging provider. Some hostels have day-use of their facilities available for an additional fee, but we do not, as we have a very limited amount of time to complete our housekeeping duties for the day and get the hostel ready for people who will be returning or arriving later in the day. Your observations are correct, having a group of 10 people in the common area while someone is trying to clean it, makes it very difficult (and nearly impossible) for the person who is doing the cleaning. That being said, we do try to be flexible, which is why I waited until 11 AM to ask your group to leave the common area, even though check out was an hour earlier than that. I'm sorry that you misunderstood our policies but I thank you for being understanding about the need to have the common area cleared out so that it could be cleaned.

Thanks again for the review. We appreciate the opportunity to receive feedback and we're happy that you enjoyed your stay.

I stayed 2 nights in a room with 4 bunk beds and the bathroom quite a distance from the room. Some of the bathrooms were closed, so bathroom access was difficult and ran out of hot water for showers. On the positive side, the setting is beautiful with a creekside firepit to enjoy in the evening. If you are accustomed to hostel stays you might be comfortable, but if not you probably should find a hotel. It is about 15 miles from the entrance to Denali National Park.

Hi there and thanks for taking the time to review us on TripAdvisor. We appreciate the opportunity to receive and respond to all feedback. First of all, I must say I apologize for the lack of hot water during your stay. We recently added a new hot water heater to our shower house, thinking that we were going to improve the hot water to the showers, and unfortunately we realized that we had some maintenance issues with our brand new piece of equipment, after it had already been installed. We are working on repairing this hot water heater now. As for some of the bathrooms being closed down, we have had 1 of 5 of our restrooms shut down for most of the summer as we have been remodeling, but we expanded our shower house to include 2 new showers and toilets at the end of last summer, so we actually have 1 more than we used to, and we really do feel that we have an adequate ratio of showers and restrooms for our occupancy rates. I'd also like to note that while some of our dormitories are a short walk from the restrooms (nothing is farther than 30 seconds from anywhere else on the property), we always try to accommodate requests to be nearer to the restroom/shower facilities if people notify us of this in advance.

I wholeheartedly agree with your advice to your review readers to please keep in mind that we are a hostel- not a hotel, and I am going to take the opportunity to expand on that idea. Yes, we are a hostel, and we work really hard to be the best one that there is. Our aim is to provide an affordable, comfortable, sociable, and communal travel experience for those who stay with us. By nature, hosteling entails sharing a sleeping area with others and waiting your turn to use the kitchen or the showers- although we hope you're not waiting for TOO long at DMMH :) The trade-off of all of this is getting to share stories and find new friendships with people from all over the world. It is a temporary community to be found while being in a state of transience, and we hope that you leave with lasting relationships and fond memories. We are not a hotel, nor are we trying to be.

Thanks again for your review and for the opportunity to respond. We hope to see you again if you come back to Denali.

We stayed in the Women's Dorm for 3 nights in mid June, we were there over the Solstice. The mosquitoes in and out of the cabin were unbelievable. The door and window screens had many large holes in them, the screen door did not close all the way . There were no quiet times, people sat up by a fire along the river all night drinking and playing guitars and arguing loudly - there is no manager on site. This happened each of the three nights we were there. Waits for the bathroom were routinely 20 minutes any time of the day or night, up to 45 minutes for a shower. The loft bed in the dorm was so low that I - a 5 foot 7 inch person - hit my head on the ceiling every time I sat up. I really could recommend this place to anyone - you would be better off bunking in your rental car.

This review is the same group as the review below. This is in response to both similar complaints.
With all due respect, I do feel I need to address some inaccuracies in your review and offer some suggestions regarding your complaints which are unjust in some regards.
First, the cabin was not the women's dormitory, it was our Wonderwave Bunk Cabin. That cabin is described and has photos on our website. This cabin is a tent cabin. It has mostly wooden walls and partially canvas. It is next to the creek and one is able to listen to the water flowing along, which is wonderful. However, as you mentioned, if people are being loud and drunk out at the campfire, you can hear that too! Which is why we have quiet time from 11 PM to 7 AM. We know people are here to see the park and get up early. They don't need to be kept up by partying. Each guest, including all of you, are told about quiet time at check in, and that it applies to the fire area as well. Just across the highway from the hostel is a Pizza Pub that stays open late into the night - partiers are welcome there - not at the fire at least not after 11.
You said in your review that you were kept up each of your three nights by loudness at the fire. I really must ask, why in the world would you not tell us at the time. We would have happily taken care of it immediately or the next day we would have talked to the abusers. You didn't have to suffer in silence. Which brings up another inaccuracy. THERE IS 24 hour staff on site and if you can't find them in their accommodations there is a telephone in the Octagon that rings to both the general manager and owner. This is explained as well and the on sight staff's accommodations are shown to everyone at check-in. You stayed on the summer solstice, that lends itself to a greater degree of partying, but it doesn't change our quiet time policy. A knock on the door would have let you sleep in peace.
Next, the mosquito population this year can only be described as over the top. I have spoken with many long time residents and none remember them being this bad. In fact it became almost impossible to find bug spay from Anchorage to Denali to Fairbanks. The door on the cabin does shut completely if one shuts it. Since you were all traveling together I would have thought that would be an easy task. However, we too thought it wasn't a very good door and its replacement was purchased prior to these two reviews not because of them. As for the hole in the screen, again, why in the world didn't you bring this up to us? Since you stayed another guest did bring it up to us and it was replaced that very day with screen we have on site. But we can't fix it if we don't happen to notice it or if no one tells us. It would have made your trip a lot happier than it apparently was.
Lastly, about the bathrooms. I don't understand why you experienced such a great delay. We have in our shower house near your cabin 2 private showers and 3 showers that have toilets and sinks inside as well. All our showers and toilets are home style letting you lock the door behind you for privacy. If I remember correctly, one of the showers with toilet and sink was shut down for repairs when you stayed. In addition to the shower house, we have 3 toilets on the lower floor of the Octagon, one with a detached sink area with two sinks. Upstairs is another shower/sink/toilet room which is just for the private room upstairs and the Women's Dorm, called the Cable Car. We added two new showers with toilets and sinks this year, even though we received very few complaints before. So, again, I don't know why you experienced a delay, but I'm sorry you did.
Yes, the Wonderwave is not huge, there is plenty of room for everyone and their belongings. Perhaps if whomever was in the loft put their heads at the center area of the loft instead of the slanting roof side there would have been less pounding of your heads.
We don't provide the greatest rooms and cabins in Denali. If that is what you needed you would be well advised to look at the two accommodations above us in ranking. Be aware though you will be paying about $1350 plus tax per night instead of $160. We try to offer an affordable, comfortable place to sleep eat and meet, but it is still a hostel and a nice one.
My management, staff and I strive to do everything possible to make every guest's visit to Alaska the best it can possibly be. I respect that our guests have spent a lot of money for what may well be their lifelong dream to visit Alaska and we treat our guests with that in mind. I'm sorry your trip wasn't what you hoped for, but honestly, we can't control Mother Nature and her mosquito plans, but given the chance we could have silenced the noise so you could hear the creek, put on a new screen for you and helped make your stay better for you. You just need to tell us of the problems while here. Thank you for taking the time to write a review and reading this response. If you or anyone has any questions or suggestions or complaints or ideas, we are all ears. Just send us an email. If you are here, just tell us. Thanks again, I hope you and your group has better travel experiences in the future.
