Denali Park Village

We stayed here 1 night as part of our Tour Package. The room was clean and fairly comfortable, but the bed was awful. It was a full bed....does anybody sleep in those anymore?...and we kept rolling into each other all night. As a matter of fact, my fiancee gave up, and slept in the other full bed so that we could actually get some sleep that night. The main lobby was nice...decent gift shop...and the restaurant was adequate, although the service was pretty poor. We sat out on the deck and enjoyed lunch when we arrived, and watched river rafters float by...pretty cool!

Room Tip: I don't know, ask for King or Queen Beds?

On a Royal Carribean land tour pre cruise, this was one of the hotels they put us in. The prevoius night we were in a Marriot. The hotel on paper sounded great, and the front looked nice, lodge-like, new, but the rooms were small, dark, almost cave like. No safe, hardly any closet, ground floor rooms in the front overlooked the staff service road and the dumpsters. All the food was very expensive, even water. I walked about 3/4 mile across the road to an RV park store to get food at a better deal. Food is expensive in AK, but McKinley was just over the top in their prices. No real atmosphere. The only nice thing was the back of the grounds was along the river. Royal Carribean really needs to take this place off their itinerary. We stopped closer to the park to pick up some people for the Denali Wilderness tour and there were some very nice hotels with activities and restaurants all around. The McKinley Village is in the middle of now where.

Room Tip: If you have to go here, ask for the rooms facing the river.

We arrived via the train from Anchorage and were promptly met by our shuttle to travel to McKinley Village Lodge. The lodge, itself, is attractive with its log beam construction and sits on a river with nice views from rear hotel rooms and restaurant. Nice patio for cocktails overlooking river. The rooms were fine.

The downside to this lodge was primarily the quality of food in the dining room...bland. Since it is several miles from the small downtown area, if you are without a car as we were, it truly limits your dining options. I could not imagine having to eat here for more than a day or two.

The grounds are not large and unless you want to walk along the main road, there is not much to do onsite. Did not even find any hiking paths around property. Poorly marked if they exist. No pool. River moves too quickly out back of hotel to swim.

Your choices are limited in this area, but if you want a few restaurants or pubs to visit in evening after day's excursion, opt for downtown location. The downside to downtown options is a short strip of hony-tonk souvenir shops and is very congested. Looks like they excavated the side of a hill and tried to figure what they could cram into a tiny clearing...not visually appealing. The Village offers a more tranquil setting.

Room Tip: Choose a room overlooking river versus driveway.

Nice enough hotel but rooms are extremely small. Front desk was very confused and errored several times before they got our check in correct. Loud bus arrivals and departures disrupted peacefulness of lodge.
Too far away from park entrance and other options for dining to rate higher. Dinner on site was okay- not great service but no other option close enough to walk. Breakfast was not cheap, but it was a buffet, probably all you can eat. We opted for a breakfast sandwich from coffee cafe. Not good but filling.

The McKinley Village Lodge was not the first choice for our two night stay in Denali but, based on Trip Advisor reviews, seemed to be the most acceptable of the various hotels that had availability.

We arrived in Denali by train from Anchorage and were pleasantly surprised to see the hotel’s courtesy bus waiting in the car park. All the hotels / lodges in Denali seem to provide the same service.

Check-in was quick and courteous. Our room just about had a view of the river through the trees although this wasn’t particularly inspiring. The room was clean, basically but adequately furnished and, once the heating was fixed, was quite comfortable. The en suite bathroom was fine.

Rooms are in various buildings set around a central reception and bar / restaurant block. So if it rains, going to eat means getting wet! A few umbrellas outside the accommodation blocks would be a nice touch. Bar and restaurant service was good. Food was adequate (not cheap), nothing to set the world alight but then this is not the sort of place where you expect or need gourmet cooking.

The main problem with the McKinley Village Lodge is that it is several miles from Denali centre and is therefore somewhat isolated. Do not be under any illusions about ‘downtown’ Denali – there isn’t much there but it does at least offer a choice of places to eat. McKinley Village Lodge does operate a courtesy bus service to / from Denali centre.

Our only reason for visiting this part of the world was to take the wilderness tour in to Denali National Park (outstanding) so what we needed was somewhere clean and comfortable to sleep and eat for two nights. In that respect McKinley Village Lodge just about fulfilled the objective. I suspect that all the hotels / lodges in Denali will be much the same, catering for short stays / high guest turnover (loads of tour buses) and trying to make a profit during a relatively short season.

The room was smaller than most motel/hotels I have stayed in. I guess they think rustic goes with Denali. This hotel was part of our package and I would not stay here again. Prices are higher in Alaska and this place took full advantage of that. $10 for a small bottle of insect repellent!

If you are like me your having a hard time deciding which hotel to stay at and what is the difference between McKinley Village Lodge and McKinley Chalet Resort. There is a big difference. McKinley Chalet is located on the Denali "strip" with the other hotels and across the street from all the souvenir stores. This hotel is very busy being a hub for various tour pick ups. A lot of noise from the buses and the ever present smell of diesel. McKinley lodge is on the south side of Denali park about 10 minutes away. A lot less traffic and noise a larger new main lobby and with rooms that have a view of the river. The Lodge has a restaurant, bar coffee stand and gift shop like the larger Chalet. They also provide train pick up and a shuttle to the Chalet. The Lodge rooms were clean but small and we had a remodeled bathroom. The Lodge provides you with more of a feeling of being in the wilderness of Alaska. If you have time check out Northern Lights Entertainment book. It gave us a 2 nights for one coupon and buy one get one dinner show coupon get one free. There were also many other coupons we used in Anchorage well worth the money.
