We took the long 90 mile tour. Took over 12 hours. An interesting experience...saw variety of wide life: bears, moos, eagle, sheep - all through the bus window. Since you cannot take the road for more then 15 miles, it's better with the tour. Just remember it us very long. A mini Alaskian safari

“Take the bus to the end of the road!”
Reviewed September 2, 2013

We did the 15 mile drive by car and it was well worth while, but do take the bus tour to the end of the park road (91 miles on a dirt road after the first 15), it is well worth the fee. Do be warned that this is all of a 12 hour day, and if you don't feel that this is for you then there are the park's own shuttle buses. But the 12 hour trip is the real deal. Your driver will have great experience of the park and knows where you are most likely to see the animals that live here. On our trip in August we saw moose with a youngster, caribou, a white wolf, a brown wolf with four cubs, Dall sheep and a couple of Brown (Grizzly) bears in the distance and then a really close encounter with another Grizzly Bear, so close we were very glad we were in a bus. We did see eagles, and ptarmigan too. And then there is the scenery, the mountains, different colours and shapes, and so lucky for us, an excellent view of Denali itself. Our guide was very informative, we were able to stop at each of the comfort stations along the way and at the excellent visitor centres. We learned a lot, our driver was very experienced and the dirt roads were of no trouble to him at all and we were all confident in his abilities. The drivers doing this trip are tested every year at the start of each season to make sure of this. For the last part of the tour we took a park warden on board, and did a short walk looking at the local flora and one of the historic houses near the end of the route. We were picked up at our hotel first thing and delivered back there at the end of an excellent though tiring day. This was a highlight of our Alaskan holiday and if you get the chance do it! Some light refreshments are provided as part of the tour, but of course you can take your own should you wish to. We also took some water with us .

“Saw lots of wildlife”
Reviewed September 1, 2013

Great trip out of the park from Kantishna. We flew in and took a park bus out. The driver was quick to point out wildlife along the way which included grizzly bears (mother and two cubs), moose at two locations, and eagles. Worth the time it took.

“Well worth it”
Reviewed August 23, 2013

Saw great country and all the animals we hoped for. Toured with Denali backcountry tours and drivers were excellent. Very long if you try for in and out on the same day. 5 - 6 hours one way. If you luck out like we did and the weather is great you will rarely see such beauty. We saw Mt McKinley which is only out 10% of the time. Truly lucky.

“Even taking the car only to mile 15 was a good trip.”
Reviewed August 23, 2013

We didn't have time for an extended bus trip into the park, but drove to Savage Lake and walked the loop. In the short time we were there we saw the state bird, a moose and a caribou. The walk was lovely and the scenery was great. Next time we will take the bus in further. Can't even imagine how beautiful that would be.
