“Idyllic Spot”

The Denali Backcountry Lodge is located as far into the Denali National Park as you can go. It is situated in a bend of the rushing Moose Creek. What a delight to watch the creek from the porch with the mountains in the distance. A few yards down the bend you can pan for gold. They provide everything. At night you can hear the water rushing by. If you want to fish, hike, ride bicycles, whatever, once you are there, it is included. They will also loan you fishing poles, hip waders, and don't forget THAT MOSQUITO HEADNET!! Yes, they have those, too! Every little (very comfortable) log cabin is free standing connected to the others by a wooden walk way. That can be a bit noisy, but it is meant to keep the path clean and dry in wet weather. The individual cabins are not locked. What a nice feeling to have that kind of security. Their motto - it's a long way out and WE drive the bus!!
We bought the Backcountry Safari package which included two nights at the entrance (Denali Cabins) and one night at the Lodge. Everything was included, even a welcoming reception. And when it is time to check out they pack you a lunch to take with you. It is expensive. But when you consider their location and the effort to get everything there, you understand. There is no electricity so all power has to be generated. They really do everything they can to accommodate your wants and wishes. Some of the dinners were a little bland, but no one will go hungry with this package. The bus ride in (92 miles) takes 6-1/2 hours with the passengers being the spotters. Anytime an animal is spotted you shout to the driver to stop. They everyone searches through his binoculars to find it. It is really fun. One time a caribou got right in front of the bus and wouldn't let us pass. We folllowed him at least a mile till he finally left the road. The driver was patient, giving the animal full right of way. We loved our stay and our visit to Denali National Park.

We absolutely loved our stay at Denali. The cabins are not overly luxurious or full of character but they are very comfortable for something this remote - a nice hot shower is a serious luxury. The facilities are very nice. The meals were excellent and the staff were incredibly friendly and helpful. Our favorite parts were the guided hikes, which were offered every day. They had hikes to suit all ability levels - we like challenging hikes and we were not disappointed.

The location is of course what makes this place truly spectacular. It was right on the banks of a rushing creek and we loved just sitting in the sun reading our books creekside. In the evenings they had a shuttle bus to Wonder Lake for sunset -- staying out here is the only way you will get to see this truly amazing sight. On our hikes we were able to see all of Denali and the whole range - spectacular.

It is not really worth it unless you stay at least two nights. The bus ride is very long (though great when you get to see loads of animals).

We stayed a night here in August 2004. The cabins are great. Very roomy with private facilities. The Lodge itself serves great food. They have a bar upstairs and a small gift shop. The bar only has beer and wine.

At regular intervals they have special hikes and our trip was made by a short excursion to nearby wonderlake at sunset. The views of Denali, Wonder lake and curious caribou have left lasting impressions.

The bus ride in is 6 hours but it goes by so fast. We saw 13 grizzly bears on our trip in which was the record so far for that season.

Because Mt. McKinley was cloud free, we took a flightseeing trip from nearby Kantishna Air. It too was incredible.

I would highly recommend staying at least two nights at the lodge so that you can take the early morning bus ride out of the park but still take advantage of the great hikes in the lodge area. The afternoon bus ride we took was nearly animal free and seemed much longer than the trip in.

This trip was the highlite of my stay in Alaska. I had been to Denali park before and stayed outside the park and been on the tour that nearly everyone takes. The drive to and the stay at Denali Backcountry Lodge surpassed the early stay several fold. The journey to the lodge began with a 6 hour drive into the park on a wilderness road. There were only 14 of us on the bus and our driver, Mark was friendly and full of knowledge which he delivered professionally. He had a great sense of humor and a great eye for spotting animals. We saw so much more on this trip than the previous one and before we got to the lodge the clouds cleared and we saw Mt. McKinley. The drive may have been the best part of the stay The two days and nights at the lodge were fantastic. the staff was superb and very friendly and were responsive to all our wants and needs. It felt like home away. The cabins were comfortable, the food beyond delicious, the activites and programs were fun and educational. I cannot say enough about this trip. And to top it all off we rode the bus out of the park with Mark and we watched two wolves chase a fox on a morning without a cloud. The trip does seem expensive but really no more than the first trip I took staying at the other end of Denali park. But the experience was so much greater at Backcountry Lodge. I plan to go back and recommend it for anyone.

The location was beautiful, the staff was very helpful, the guided hike was very nice, the food was great. However, the day we were to begin our stay, it was raining, and they said it was snowing further in the park, so their bus could not take us down the park road to the lodge. The lodge representative said they would put us up at their cabins at the entrance. The next day, when we got to the backcountry lodge, the manager there basically told us there will be no refund, because it was weather related. One night at the backcountry lodge costs $680 and one night at the cabins at the entrance costs $99. I don't think this is a good way to do business in the hospitality industry!
