Review of Scotty's Castle

Scotty's Castle

Attraction details
Owner description: Scotty's Castle CLOSED until 2019 due to flood damage. This 1920s vacation home in the desert was built by insurance magnate Albert Johnson. However, at the time most people believed it belonged to Death Valley Scotty, who claimed to have a secret gold mine in the tunnels beneath it. 99% of the contents are original from when the Johnssons vacationed there in the 1920s and 1930s. You can walk the grounds or read the exhibits in the visitor center for free. However, access to the House, Underground, or Lower Vine Ranch are by guided tour only. You can reserve tickets before 9pm the previous day, or tickets are usually available to customers upon arrival.

We learned a lot from the little museum before the tour. Our tour guide (Keegan) was a hoot and had so many personal tidbits that Scotty and the Johnsons came alive.

We loved everything about our tour of the Castle.
Our guide was so at ease with us as we were only a group of 2 couples..I think we saw and learned so much more by being in that group . Our tour was much longer than should have been, no one was waiting as we were in the last tour of the day and our guide didn't rush us, his knowledge of the Castle was unbelievable and we could ask anything and got a wonderful narrative of the "Famous Scotty"..a must see!

I didn't do the tour, but I still walked outside the area, and it was a great place to gather information about the park.

It's such a famous landmark. We lucked out and there was a rattlesnake in the parking lot. The rangers were keeping everyone safe, but we got a very good view. The rangers doing the tour were delightful!! Bring a picnic, the grounds are cool and grassy. There are two tours, we just did one, but may come back and do the other some time! Kids will be bored. Some stairs involved.

Tour guides dress in period costume, like actors. Really nice tour, amazing place. Took awhile to drive, so we were all wondering if it was worth it. And yes our whole group did feel like it was worth the time.
