We spent several hours at the Mesquite Flat Sand Dunes. They are easy to get to, just off the main road. Our kids loved the dunes. First they tried sledding on cardboard boxes, which did not work. We saw a few people using disk-shaped sleds, which worked okay. Then the kids just rolled down. The sand is surprisingly cool and very fine. Getting back to the car was tough, it seemed 3x as long as we'd hiked out. Bring plenty of water - we didn't bring much b/c we didn't expect to walk out as far as we did. My kids rated this the #1 stop in DV.

In every shop in Death Valley there are postcards and pictures of these dunes. Of course the photos were taken at golden sunset light so they don't always look that way. We drove by on the highway a few times before I realized that these were the dunes in the photos.

We had just taken a hike in Mosiac Canyon and decided to add a walk out on the dunes to see sunset. It was such a different sensation walking on the sand after having all those rocks and stones underfoot. You can walk out very far and the view changes as you head out. The sunset creates long shadows of us on the sand and the details of the shadows in the dunes changes as the angle of the light lowers.

All through Death Valley you have the opportunity to see how small people look as they move through the landscape. Kids will have a blast running up the dunes and sliding down as well as just being in such a unique environment.

I am amazed at the variety of thing you see in Death Valley, these dunes add another item to the list. Worth a stop in morning or evening to get a picture or take a walk.

It is amazing to see these sand dunes in the middle of nowhere. It is not too far to walk from the road and feel you are in a totally different part of the planet.

It is difficult to describe what draws you to a particular place but these sand dunes have that magical something. Being from the UK we plan out our trips but are amazed at the number of times we want to drive via Death Valley. The reason being these sand dunes.
The first time we saw them we walked out a little way took some photos and thought wow! that was good, what a stunning place, but oh so hot.
We have since returned with water and supplies to hike out amongst the dunes. A word of warning, you must respect the environment you find yourself in, prepare thoroughly and take enough food and water with you.
The dunes are best experienced early or late in the day when shadows are cast. We have found to hike out to the tallest of them, early in the morning is best...do not hike in the middle of the day.
Whilst you get great views from the roadside, which now has a proper car park and a toilet (it used to be just a pull in at the side of the road) you get amazing views from the top of the large dunes.
From whichever view point you choose, remember your camera.
